Adhd

hello,
Are there any other nurses that have ADD????? am I the only one?
I've been Dx. for over 5 years now, I've been an LPN for over 16 years. Mediction helps a little. It seems that I am having trouble graduating from the 2 yr. ADN program. I can't get thru the clinical setting without someone pointing out that Iam unfocused, and it has made me feel like Ive chosen the wrong ocupation to be sucessful in. If any one has any experiences, advice, hope, if you've been here, etc.,
Id be sooooo happy to hear from you.

I am thinking of going the excelsior route,,only have 6 nursing exams to take, but I fear the CPNE.

thanks,

lin

Re: Adhd

I do not have ADD/ADHD, but my husband has been diagnosed with it since high school, and I have a couple of questions. (1) Can ADD/ADHD just go away? My husband claims that he doesn not have ADD anymore, or atleast he thinks he doesn't, but it seems to me he still has trouble concentrating and he can't get through school. (2) Are there any programs for people with ADD/ADHD at colleges and universities? By the way I am a first term nursing student, so some of you who are nurses and have probably had exorience with people with these type of disorders.

Re: Adhd

What I was convinced was ADD was actually depression. A little effexor made things a lot better. Then I quit taking it. So now I see something shiny and I'm gone.

You can do your own research but, I've done mine and know that you do not grow out of ADHD. Thus, there are a lot of adults dealing with ADHD on a daily basis in all walks of life. I can empasize with your husband not being able to get through school and the difficulty in concentrating.
I would advise seeing a professional that has experience in dealing with adults and Attention Deficit Disorders specificly.
One of the biggest things I've discovered over time is that a person with ADHD can be made to feel like there is nothing they can do right. And this of course only adds to the problem of being successful in accomplishment. People with ADD/ADHD are usually very gifted individuals with great talents and creativity. I have been given advise to pick a career in which these gifts & talents can be nurtured and utilized for success.
So it kind of makes sense that, when someone with ADHD chooses a career that requires a lot of the skills of a tedious concentration nature, multi tasking plus+++ etc.
Can you see how this could spell disaster. It is possible though, i really believe it is possible for an individual with ADHD to be successful in any field. So, I m not saying we can't be good nurses, doctors, airline pilots, etc., but this, in my humble opinion would require a huge commitment and pulling of all resource's together on the part of the individual with ADHD.

Re: Adhd

Thanx romilia,
My husband use to be on ritalin when he lived with his parents before he left for college, but he said he hated taking it so when left I guess he tried to conivnce himslef he no longer had that prblem anymore. Lately I have been making him call around to psychiatrist to rediagnose him so he can realize he still has a prblem, and get some help. I am sure there is other ways to deal with ADD other than druggin an individual up.

Yes, of course there are alot other ways of dealing with ADHD. If fact I think a combination of medication & therapy works really well for some people. I get so disgusted with Docs sometimes just prescribing medication with no other advice or follow- up. You can try behavioral modifications with a therapist. It really helps to keep a journal and a sched. planner book for me.
