First she is an alien not an immigrant. Immigrants obey the law coming here. I have no problem with them getting or giving organs.

She also is NOT a minor in many states. So yes she did/does have the right to choose to come here or not.
The system is screwed up and everyone "caring" about an unlawful sweet little girl not getting the right organs and then getting worst is sad and wrong for the system. She should have been sent back to Mexico when they found out she was an alien!

Because apparently this post needs repeating:

This quoted post is sickening.

Jesica received her transplant through UNOS. Do you think UNOS broke their own policy?

So she is here legally, and the funds were paid for by a charity fund set up for her.

Now two Americans didn't get organs. The question is, should persons come from other countries, legally and with funds, get organ donations from our health care system? Other people come to the country, (say from rich Arab nations for example) for care. Should the same call for organ donations.

Should foreigners (sp?) be allowed to move up the list on organ donations because they have the money?

I don't know, just wondering.

I have to clarify something. I have read that Jesica's family orginally came to the US 3 years ago by paying a smuggler to et them in. Only read it somewhere, I can't back it up. But, after being in the country, went through the proper channels to make their problem known and now hold non-resident alien status--again can't find the article.

And I really don't think that UNOS is going to budge on their own policy and bylaws.

The only way they move up on the list is how they are categorized based on the imminent need or lack there of, not because they have money. Or did you bring in the money part because they were able to afford to get here?

Wendy, you're too sweet for words and have such gorgeous rose colored glasses.

Some of us live in hot spots where immigation/illegal aliens etc. is a bigger issue than where you are. So perhaps thats why there is a bit of anger and frustration that you see.

Its more of frustration as to when do we say enough is enough. When do we close our doors and take care of those who are here. Or do we just remain charitable.

My hospital has picked up the bill for many an illegal. We had a patient who was paralyzed and stayed with us over a year, because he was illegal, had no health care, no where to go. My hospital continues to pay his bill in a nursing home because it's cheaper than keeping him inpatient. Obviously, we aren't so unchartiable a society we would turn our backs on illegals in need. But to get an organ transplant is quite another issue.

Your right, I didn't mean it that way. What I meant was, should foreign born be allowed on the list the same as American born, giving the same priority, etc. By foreign born, I mean, noncitazen.

(I was basically meaning that if it wasn't at American taxpayer expense, not that the money moves them up the list.)

Thanks for the links. That answered a few questions.

If Jesica is here in the US legally, then great. If she is not, yes, then I have a problem with it. Just because I have a problem with the concept of funding an illegal's health care doesn't mean I think she is less of a person or deserves to die. Nor does it mean I am an evil person.
There has been waaayyy too many conflicting versions of this story to begin with. I was merely reacting to someone posting that she was here illegally and was funded via tax dollars. If that were true, yes I would be upset. I have every right to be upset with a system that supports that. But again, that doesn't mean that I hate the girl, think she should die or whatever.
I would hope that most people can see the difference - but apparently not.
