Just wondering if anyone knew how to go about working as a nurse in Italy (other than joining the Navy and getting stationed over there). I'm not fluent in Italian so any pointers on immersion type courses would be useful, too. I am American so I don't have the EU advantage, but would still be interested in hearing from anyone who has worked themselves or knows someone who has worked in Italy.
Have tried to research this some on my own, but can't really find any info.

Unfortunately for you, all of the information for the Nursing Council is in Italian. You will definitely need to be fluent in the language as usually you will be expected to pass an exam in that language, same as any foreign nurse coming to the US.

There are several immersion programs available for Italian. I would highly recommend one of those first.

As far as studying Italian in the US, Berlitz has some excellent immersion type programs. check with the office near you. Or there are quite a few in Italy.
Which part are you considering moving to? I usually try to get over there about every year or so.

I actually own a school over here, so this is now my home. Not working as a nurse over here in a hospital, but I am teaching nurses every day.........literally ... seven days per week.

Wow! How did you end up in Thailand? Are you Thai? I have some friends that are Thai. They're twins, one is a dentist, and the other is in research. Thanks for the advice. I'd like to learn Italian anyway, even if I don't ever get to work in Italy. It's a beautiful place. I love Florence, but I know it's a popular place that a lot of people would like to live in. I imagine it would be pretty competetive to get a position there. I also liked Rome, but wonder if I could handle the big city vibe on a 24/7 basis.

HI There!
I just saw the best travelogue about some mediterranean islands off the coast of Spain, just a short distance from Barcelona and very close to Italy, AND even Northern Africa...like Morroco...
They are called the Majorca Islands...or Majorca de Palmas islands...
There is a big hospital there...900 beds, top notch in vascular surgery....and is monitored and supported by the EU.
I even looked to see if there were any job openings....no kidding...
This place is just beautiful....it looks like Kauai Hawaii, except mediterranean...fields of vineyards...tile rooftops...beautiful architecture, and lots of stuff to do...Palmas, the major hub, has been a haven for european artists who go there to paint, write, compose, etc....very eclectic environment..
The economy is quite affordable....there are even properties there for sale..
many europeans go there in the winter months for R&R....

Few requirements for working there. Able to function at the high schol level or higher in Italian. Language exams in Italian. Passing of their nursing exam in Italian. To go there on a student visa, you would not be permitted to work during that time. And you cannot apply for a visa to work until you have passed their nursing exam, and language exam.

My school did not teach Italian.............and was located in Asia.

Just dropping by...coz I was given an offer to work in St Marks in Greece but i knew it was a scam because they were asking me money to process the papers and Ive googled it and I cant find anything about the hospital
