Post Nursing Student wanting an overseas placement and needs help

I am currently finishing my second year of my BSc in Nursing at university and I am interesting in doing one of my placements overseas. I would preferably like to work in the orphanges in Romania, however, I am open to other suggestions. The problem I am having is that my university insists that I make all the contacts alone, and have provided me with little guidance. I am trying desperatly to speak to someone who is familiar with this area of nursing and who may know of someone I could contact to speak with about this. I would love to have the opportunity to take part in such a rich learning experience and feel I have a lot to learn and offer the different people I would meet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jacqueline

I've lived in Japan, Spain, Korea and Alaska. Your best bet would be military bases overseas. You can contact any base hospital in the states to find out about openings. These are well-paid, safe positions. Take it from me, Romania and the former eastern bloc countries are not the safest place for a young american without the language and cultural skills needed to survive. Good luck

first I comment you on your enthusiasm and determination. Perhaps you need to look at volunteer organizations to be able to get the position you want. Keep in mind however that many volunteer services want experienced staff and might not want to give a student seeking placement a try.. But you can give it a try.

Here are a few sites I found that might be of interest.

Good luck. Let us know how you do.

Cool

Hello Jackie,

This reply may come to late and for that i'm sorry. I have just read
your post to the allnurses.com bulletin board inquiring about overseas
placements. There are many many options available as a student. I
would suggest you start with the following: The Canadian Nurses
Association has links to various agencies which send nurses overseas. I
think their URL is http://www.cna~nurses.ca You can also try the
Canadian Public Health Association http://www.cpha.ca and the Canadian
Society for International Health http://www.csih.org . If those don't
pan out feel free to contact me.

Good Luck

Chrys
