Re: International nursing students in the US

You can send the three applications at the same time. Including the Visa Screen application, if you can afford it.

I do not like the on-line application system, my suggestion is to send a completed paper one when you send in the required paperwork.

If you graduated more than 10 years ago form HS, then you do not need to submit it, if less than that, it needs to be a copy that has been translated by a certified translator, same for all documents that need translation.

If it asks for a Diploma, then they want a Diploma. Give them everything that they ask for, or it will give you grief.

Re: International nursing students in the US

Hi Suzanne!

I just graduated from an American college (RN degree, F-1 visa). I'm currently looking for an employer that would sponsor me for a green card and I'm studying for NCLEX.
I read here about Visa screen certificates and I went to the site and I started an online application. I got stuck when it asked me for proof of English proficiency - am I exempt from in as an American school graduate? I did take TOEFL before admission (more than 3 years ago); do I have to take it again? If I don't have to take it, do I leave that field blank?
Also, in the licensure section, I put information about my LPN license (which I took recently), becaue I didn't take NCLEX-RN yet. Was it a right thing to do, or should I wait to get my RN license and then fill out that application.
Thanks a lot!

The same thing happened to me but I did mail them an application along with the fee and ask the school to send a transcript. I didn’t send any of my previous TOEFL / degree / secondary school details since we are exempted from educational review….hope they don’t ask for that.
Did your state board require background check before test?

I'm applying in NY - I don't know anything about a background check - how do you do that?
Do you have to request transcripts from all your schools (in my case, I went to secondary and one postsecondary school abroad, then I went to a nursing school in NY). Getting a transcript from the U.S. will be easy, but getting one from abroad, will be very difficlult!

Zinaa, you do not need any of the english exams. Just leave that field blank.
Have you not done background checks while in school?

I am applying for the NJ license and they need background check and finger printing before we sit for our test; there is agency does this thru state board for a fee. I think in NY the employer does this before they hire you, if it is not mandated as part of license. I think for visa screen just need your bsn/ assoc transcript. no need for toefl info.

Did anyone know any hospitals who is presently sponsoring in New York city area? I reached couple of major ones known to me and they are not sponsoring at the moment.

That's to make sure you haven't commited any crimes.
Backgroung checks are done in the Bureau of Investigation. It takes only a few minutes.

A VSC will not be issued unitl you pass the NCLEX-RN exam, that is the requirement. You are exempt from the English exams for the VSC if you did your training in the US.

I do not ever recommend the on-line application, only the old-fashioned paper one.

Thanks a lot Suzanne! But what about the background check? Is it a requirement in NY and when should I do it?
