Hi Everyone,

I have noticed that in the past little while, there have been some recent posts about the UAE. I am hoping that someone out there can answer some of my questions.

My husband is an electrical engineer. He thinks that his job may be transferred to the UAE in the upcomming September. This news is quite new to us. A little frightening actually.

I however, am completing the final year of my Canadian BScN degree. By the time he has to leave, I will be finished my degree. We are both Canadian citizens.

Here are some of my questions ... . . . .

1. Is it possible for a new nursing graduate to get a job in the UAE? I've noticed that most jobs seem to be for experienced nurses.

2. I will not need the benefit of accomadation as this is included for us in my husbands benefit package. Is it possible to get extra pay to compensate for this benefit?

3. What is the work schedule like - 6 days a week? Can a nurse pick between day and night shifts?

4. The all famous question..... What is the salary/benefit package like?


Any help with my questions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi kkettle. I'm working as a nurse in a government-operated here in Dubai for more than four months now. Here are the answers I can share to your queries:

1. Yes there is a chance that you will be hired though you are a recent graduate. The employers here have a preference for Western-educated nurses.
2. The accomodation package can be converted to cash which will be added to the monthly salary in case that you don't avail of it.
3. I work 5 days a week (8 1/2 hours a day). That is UAE's labor policy for all workers. There is also no provision for an overtime work ifever you wish to do extended duties.
4. The salary is very much worth it. As for me who was previously working at a hospital in my native country Philippines, the salary I am getting from working here in Dubai is very much higher. But there are some nurses from Europe, USA and Canada who are receiving more than double my salary. That will be a great news for you.

I was wondering if you get a choice in the shifts you work. Can you pick between day and night shifts? What time do you start work in the mornings? I have so many questions . . . . .

About the work shifts which is 7-3, 3-11 and 11-7, you may request to the nurse supervisor if you want a schedule that is convenient to you. But you must have a valid reason for doing so. Schedules are posted on the first day of the month so you must ask the supervisor two weeks in advance. I requested for a night shift on April since I'll be reviewing for the IELTS which I'll be taking on May at the British embassy here in Dubai and thankfully it was approved.
I'm just on my fourth month here and what I can share to you is very limited. I'm sure other members can add answers to your query.

Hi again kkettle. Canadian Specialist Hospital will be opening this 2nd quarter. You may inquire to them for an employment opprtunity. But there are many hospitals here in Dubai that you can apply to ifever you and your husband are already settled in here. Nurse shortage is everywhere

The shifts may vary from 11pm-7am, 7am-3pm, 3pm-11pm or 7-7 in many other hospitals. 40-48 hours a week as 48 hours in most of the private hospitals. Depends on what ur contract sais.

ninacf, does dubai requires work experience from our country like the philippines or they could hire newly graduates without experience like from western countries?
