Does California Board of nursing require local board license?

Hi, I was originally trying to apply to NY board because it seemed the easiest route but now I read that CVS requires licensure from your origin country?

So now I'm looking at CA because I heard from here that it is easy to obtain a license there too but just takes longer (which is no problem for me).

But looking at the requirements in CA, it also states that you need proof of license in origin country BUT if you do not, you need a written explaination as to why.

Why is it people on this board said you can go through NY and CA without local board exam but on the website it states differently?

I've tried to contact the CA board but no one ever answers and I get a voice mail box that always says its full so I cannot leave a message either. I also tried email but they never respond.

For CA, you can just write a letter explaining why you don't have a license yet. That is all. Any honest explanation will do. Many people did this already.

maybe, you can also try to call NY and ask if it requires a license from the country where the applicant obtained his/her nursing education and then post here the info you'll get from NY.

i understand from suzanne's responses to similar questions in the past that NY does not require such license. i also read the NY website and it does not state such requirement. the NY application form also does not state that you need to have such license. but if you have one, then you must declare it.

likewise, in the application form for cgfns cvs-ny, it merely asks if you have a license or not but it does not say that you need to have one. if you have a license, then cgfns requires you to send an authorization for validation of license form (part of the application packet).

i hope this helps.

This is a very good suggestion.

What would be acceptable and unacceptable explaination? My reason is I cannot afford to take the local exam now and I have to prepare for my wedding. Is that ok?

My friend's reason for not having a local license was "will not practice nursing in my homecountry", then she got her eligibility.

i think it depends on the person processing you eligibility, in the case of my friend, the BON of California asked for a photocopy of his license in the Philippines......

Did your friend included a letter in her application explaining why she doesn't have a local license yet? It doesn't even have to be formal. Some of my friends just hand-written their explanation in a piece of bond paper and all there explanations were different from one another.

Re: Does California Board of nursing require local board license?

I called California board long distance. The license evaluator on the other end said just put "no intent to practice in country of professional education" as reason. I think they put the license requirement there so they can check any disciplinary action against past licenses and make sure potential CA RN's arent running away from criminal/disciplinary/administrative cases in the country of origin..
