California RN Interim Permit TOEFL requirement

On the California BON says TOEFL is required for applying RN Interim Permit. However, it doesn't say how much is the minimum TOEFL score to apply for one. Does anyone know how much? Also, if I got my interim permit while waiting for my CGFNS visa screen to pass, will I be able to work before the completion of my visa screen?

Much thanks.

A passed TOEFL for nurses and the country license. Once you have your interim permit you can work immediately if you are a green card holder already. The validity of the IP is only six months. If you are outside of the US, they will issue you a letter telling you are approved for an IP but won't issue you one. They will advice you to write them once you are in the US and show them prove of entry before they will release your IP.

Hope I answer much of your concern.

Thank you so much. I am not sure what's the passed TOEFL score for nurse? Is it around 540 as stated in the visa screen? Thank you so much!

Re: California RN Interim Permit TOEFL requirement

hello!! i am a nurse in the philippines..i just arrived here in California last august (petition). i passed all the requirements for NCLEX last september 21. though i havent taken any english exam, i still applied for the interim permit (because my friend said that its okay because Philippines is english-speaking country though its not the main dialect). now its been 3 months since the time i passed my application and im kinda worried about my papers. i havent received any letter from the BON. i even thought that my incomplete requirements for interim permit may have caused delayed issuance of eligibility letter. please correct my notions if im wrong..im really worried about this..
any help that you guys can share will be highly appreciated!!

Your friend gave you wrong information, CA BRN will not process your interim permit without having first passed the English exam.

That the Philippines is English speaking does not matter here, immigration even requires that you take the English exams to work in the US. Many do not pass the series of exams the first time from your country.

In order to get the Interim Permit, you need to meet the requirements for licensure in CA.......that will be first.......the only difference is that you will not have taken the NCLEX exam, but you must meet all of the other requirements.

And a key thing to remember, you will not get the same salary as an RN with the IP. I always recommend getting the NCLEX exam done as soon as possible.

Prob. not, esp. so that CA BRN doesn't require an English Exam for a foreign-educated nurse to sit for NCLEX.

The ave. time-frame for getting the eligibility letter for NCLEX from CA BRN is 4-6 months and sometimes a little bit more if they received your application on busy months. Their processing depends entirely on their current workload that is why it varies anywhere from 3 mos. (quite uncommon) and up to 8-9 mos. (that I know off) but ave. is 4-6 mos. as they stated on their instructions for foreign-educated nurses.

Know a few that only got their eligibility letter after their 6 mos. validity to stay in the US expired and were forced to go home and wait for the letter before going back to the U.S.
