hmmm....hard to say. We both do a lot of work but in different ways. They have sometimes 3x the amount of pts than I do, however, mine usually require more 1 on 1 time, more vitals, more assessments, more charting...so I think it evens itself out.

Here in the Dallas area there is a difference. I work a county hospital and I have to say that I often have a 1:1 because of the level of difficulty and often never sit down the whole shift, typically travel to at least one scan or procedure, and have multiple gtts plus the vent to contend with all day. Is my liability higher than a med-surg nurse? You bet, so I think the extra pay does help compensate for putting my a** on the line every day.

We used to have a differential, but when another health system took over, well that went out the door. But we work where we want, so i dont think there should be a difference in pay. Sure you get sicker patients at times but its only one pt and you know them back and forth, on the floors you dont get to know your pts as well. If you are putting your ass on the line daily it is because you choose to.

The populist in me wants everyone to get paid the same for their hard labor... but the ICU nurse in me complains that I can be floated to a med-surg floor and function safely in that environment but a med-surg RN can't hang in my ICU. Same for all specialist nurses. Look at specialist doctors, they get paid more than general medicine doctors.

I'm not saying that Iit's fair or that I've taken sides, just that I see both sides.

We get paid more for our qualifications. If you have a masters in Crit care - you get more for that but if you have your masters in Palliative Care then you also get more for that.

Makes it fairer I think and puts the incentive to furthering education no matter WHERE you work in the hospital.
