Hi,
I'm new to this site and the whole blog thing. I'm in the Philadelphia area and just finished the HEDIS project. I loved the company I worked with, the project was really well organized and my project manager was always available if I had questions.

Kind of disappointed it's over!! Will definitely do this again next year.
Looks like some of you have had trouble with companies you've worked for on this project. Good info to have for future reference. A friend of mine is working on a medicaid plan in Philly and the project is a mess - they're still doing the data collection. Her company is located in Wayne, Pa. I'm learning who to stay away from!!!

Anyone in the Philadelphia area know of any record review or abstract projects that are coming up??? I see MedAssurant has multiple ads on Craigs list - makes me nervous that they advertise the same positions every week for months on end. Anyone ever work for MedAssurant?

I'm also new to this site, the way I got here is because I was looking up temp agencies and ways to find RNs who want to do HEDIS. I am a nurse consultant for an insurance company in Phoenix, Az and we would like to do our HEDIS review internally next yr. I will need 3-4 nurses who are willing to work about 3 months on the chart reviews. I'm not sure what the best way is to find reliable experienced nurses, any suggestions?

Hi cherish 62. I'm the one who started this thread way back when, so WELCOME.

I found my first HEDIS job in So. CA by looking in the newspaper starting about Oct., or Nov. The first company found nurses for a So. CA insurance company. The 2nd year THAT insurance company decided to go internal and contacted those who did it the year before...after that they had a ready made base. If I were still in CA, I'd still be working for them.

The company I'm working for now posted a request here on this thread and that's how I found them. The first year I went to Washington, DC for a week just before Christmas to help do kind of a pre-HEDIS survey.

This year the same company has "scanners" who go to the doctor's offices to scan the material. It is then put on their secure server for experienced nurses to abstract from home, in their jammies and bunny slippers if they want...GREAT JOB!!!

I've noticed LOTS of ads for HEDIS abstractors on the various job sites on the internet.

Arby, is this a job you do in addition to a FT Staff position? Or do you do the Hedis job FT?

I'm interested in doing this as a PT gig if possible, but I'm a new grad, however I have 5 years of QI experience including medical chart reviews.

Hey I worked for MedASSurant for about 7 months and thank God I got out of there when I did. When we left Annapolis it was like they moved us to an abandon warehouse in Bowie, the building was not finished and people were getting sick left and right. We sat two people to a table (cafeteria tables and not the big ones) at a time, for about 5 months until they decided it was time for us all to have our own cafeteria table. Then at the end of May we moved up to the fourth floor big whip our cubes were what we refer to as a cardboard box, the poor preceptors were packed in a hot box like sardines. This truly is not a company I would recommend working for. They are not personal whatsoever, like I said I was with the company a little over 7 months and not once did I meet DuMleavy, which is what we refer to him as. If you go to the CMS website and read the resource guide you will see that a lot of stuff you are coding for the Medicare and Medicaid is incorrect. The poor remote people have no benefita and if there is not enough work they dont get paid, you might be hired for 40 hours but that doesnt mean you are going to get your 40 hours. If anyone has any questions or is planning on applying or joining the company just let me know!

Hi everybody! New to this sight just yesterday

ARBY you seem to be well informed about HEDIS.

I am currently doing the training for MDS and I happened to have met a nurse briefly the other day from one of my sister institutions (I work in a female prison, she works in a mens prison), and she is doing Hedis. This was the first time I ever of heard of it in 16 years of nursing. (When I inquired more about it, I got the feeling that it was some type of big secret job?????) I only came across it today by accident while researching more about MDS. I live in Michigan, and I would like to know more about how to get into doing HEDIS. I am doing the MDS course in hopes of someday being able to do this type of work from home as a side gig in my future endeavors, and as I graduate towards retirement.
I don't know where to begin looking for HEDIS jobs specifically in my area other than doing internet engine searches.
Any advice would be very helpful.

Also, I read the threads about MedAssurant. I have seen their adds in the local paper classifieds, and I thought they were looking for ? coder, ?abstractors?, but I figured it was something to do with being certified in an aspect of medical records or billing/coding, so I didn't give it much thought.

I'm beginning to see alot of companies advertise for positions that they want nurses to fill, but they don't specify in their adds that they are looking for nurses, so a nurse more than likely will skip over that add (I do/have), unless they are familiar with and know what the keywords in these adds mean. I only recently came to know what MDS meant!!! after seeing it time and again in the classifieds, so I started asking around about it.
So if someone can offer any guidance, it would be much appreciated.

HI! I thought I would add my 2 cents worth. I have been doing Hedis work since 2000 and have seen many changes. I found my first job in the newspaper and through networking have added others through the years. This year I worked from home and was paid by the chart with a bonus for accuracy. The company sent scanners to the physician's offices who then scanned the charts into a secure server. It really is an efficient way to conduct this type of work. I am a ICU nurse and work 12 hour nights so did this on my days off. I could wake up at night feel like working so did--it was great!!--no traveling--no wasted time. I did over 2000 charts this year which financially was nice. I really enjoy this type of work--it is a nice change of pace. I always start this time of year looking for Hedis work for the next year.

RubyRN, yes I disliked OB charts too 'cause they took SOOOO long. When I did them, luckily I was paid by the hour rather than the chart.

Can you find out from the company who did your HEDIS before, who the nurses were. OR, advertise in all your local papers and many of the previous nurses will see it.

zahyria, HEDIS is usually done for 3-4 months in the spring, which is good 'cause after looking at 1200-1600 charts you're ready for it to be DONE

Hamyani, check with the other nurse you mentioned and see who she works for. Don't feel bad, I'd been a nurse for 30+ years before I heard of it when my cousin told me about it.

dec12, I SOOO agree with you. I, too, did charts from home on my computer and LOVED it. Like you said, if you can't sleep you can get up at 2 am in you jammies and bunny slippers and "work". When I did them this year they thought I'd have ~1700 charts but ended up I had less than that....glad I didn't already have the money spent. I think this was the first year the company I worked for did it this way so I'm hoping for more next year.

This company also paid by the chart and gave a bonus for completion and accuracy. They hadn't mentioned the possibility of a bonus at the start so, when the "extra" check came at the end, I contacted them and said I thought they'd overpaid me., a nice bonus. When I did HEDIS "live" they also paid a bonus for above the required number of charts while maintaining accuracy....monthly I think.
