Are there any of you working on a reservation? Could you tell me more about it if you do? I found out through my school that there is a scholarship for people who are willing to work in health care on a reservation and it is something that always appealed to me. Thanks!

I do know here in Canada if you are a regisered staus indian the band will pay for your education but like the army, you have to work on a reservation for a period of time to give back to their community.

I also would like to look into this but don't know how, what, or who to contact about it. Does anyone have an address, phone #, web site or anything to get info on local reservations? I know there are a couple in the area but have not a clue where a clinic or whatever would be for them.

First, determine which area... ...then do to the blue government pages in the phone book and look up Indian Affairs or whatever its called where you are. They should be able to give you a list of clinics on the reservations.

For the past five years I have been going to a native american (Lakota) res in South Dakota called Rosebud. The people there are very poor, but open to people coming in to help them. They have a local clinic in Mission, South Dakota and a hospital as well. However, the people have no way to get to the clinics and I notice especially the dental care is very very bad. I see there is a nurse practitioner in Mission who sees patients, but I wish there were some way to transport people. I would contact (on any res) the tribe (because they have the authority on the res). YOu could do this via website, for example, do a search on the internet ex. "Lakota reservations" or whatever tribe you are interested in. HOpe this helps.

You can contact Indian Health Service. There is scholarship funding for those that agree to work for a certian period of time to repay their loans for school.

I worked many years ago in Tuba City, Arizona and just loved it. It is the tertiary center for the Navajo Nation there. You got to see alittle of everything. Never knew what would come in the door next. Kayneta also has a very nice facility.

I am an Anishinaabe giigoonkwe, (Chippewa fish clan woman) but I am also mixed cultured and urban born and live acculturated, (not assimilated) and do not participate tribally as I am from Chicago.

However, I have a great interest in working for the IHS, the Indian Health service. If you go to their website, (a google search will get you there) then look at nursing recruitment and then to regional directors you can email or call them or write them.

I am not sure where the nearest site is to your current location but they do have a loan repayment program. You can only get the scholarships IF you are a registered tribal member but the loan repayment is for all Nurses that they agree to.

Also, there may be locations closer to your home state, not sure.

I have a friend who married a medical resident who had an Indian Health Service scholarship, and was obligated to work for the IHS for however-many years after she finished her residency. They are living in a rural part of AZ and she works in the primary care clinic on the res. They both love it, and have chosen to stay on since she finished her mandatory service a while back. I'm sure she could make more money somewhere else, but they both enjoy the area and lifestyle and she has been v. happy with her work there.

Im doing a travel assignment at an IHS hospital in Claremore ok, this is my 3rd assignment there, have worked ER and Icu, pretty easy money compared to the private sector. here there isnt Indian preference in er or icu but in other areas there is. er is somewhat like a lg clinic but every once in a while a trauma shows up and we have to ship. many travel agencies contract with IHS.

*some* Tribes choose to hire directly or have Tribal Hire Choice, rare though. It is easy to notice this through scrolling through the jobs at the IHS website. It will list either nothing or "Tribal Hire" after the position.

Oh, what a total bummer to know, (as a mixed cultured person) that the IHS is going 'rental' and hiring the travel coporations rather than the nurses direct.

I would imagine that it is both, the Nurses and the Tribal Nations that are getting the shaft in that deal.
