I was a brand new grad working in the ER when this 80 something little lady was brought in. She had a BKA a few months ago and was being cared for by family members. They brought her in because she was running a high temp and had a foul odor coming from her stump. One of the residents examined her and ordered her stump to be soaked in NS and betadine solution. I placed her leg in the basin to soak and left the room for a minute. A few minutes later I heard her screaming down the hall. I rushed down to see what was wrong and she was crying and saying she was being eaten alive. I looked down at the basin and it was FULL of huge magots swimming around. I called the doctor in and he clipped away the flap from her stump and many more magots fell out into that basin. I felt so bad for her. She was so upset and apologizing to us. Her family had not taken her to any of her follow-up appointments and didn't seek medical attention for her until her fever got out of control. Needless to say, we reported the family for elder abuse.

Its amazing what ya see in the ER. Didn't run me off though

hmm.... after all night for 2 days straight with a confused and hallucinating LOL screaming 'Nurse! NURSE!!!! EMERGENCY HELP I've FALLEN!' and, running into the room only noting her to be flat on her back in the bed... it was interesting...
then, we had one of our aides in the nurses station say, (just a little too loudly) 'I think I'm gonna start calling 'Patient! Patient!' just for a little change of pace'

you'd never guess what we heard in the hall the REST OF THE NIGHT....

its been a LOOONG night

Along the line of the lady with the BKA, about 15 years ago, we had a patient admitted from ER with CHF and huge, swollen legs. The family had been tired of changing his bed sheets at home because of the fluid seepage from his legs, so they made him sit in a chair with his legs in a garbage bag.
Yep, you guessed it-the squad that brought him in told us this was the absolute WORST patient they ever saw!!!
The family told the ER staff "We change the bags when they get full!!!

Another LTC story. sadly I cannot take credit for this one as it was told to me by a friend.

It goes....

She was makeing rounds on her patients when the wife of a residant asked her to find her husbands dentures.

She looked everywhere, even in other residents rooms. His roommate was incoherant so he couldent have taken them.

The patient couldent remeber what he had done with them. She gave up and took to cleaning up the two resisdents. she cleaend the resident who had lost his dentures first and had a hard time cleaning carmel out of his mustash and mouth.

She then cleaned up his roomate and found the missing detures stuck to his scrotum with carmel, when she changed his depends.

Guess the guy was enjoying the carmel so much he forgot about his teeth.

One of our well known patients was in the hospital again. Got drunk, fell down, hit a cop, had a choice of going to jail or to the hospital, and guess what he chose? I was tryingto nice to him...after being sworn at, spit at, and flashed, it was a little difficult. I was getting him ready for a shower...had the water warming up and I was putting some towels and a clean gown on the chair so he could get dried off and changed when he was done. I had my back to him and all of a sudden I was wet...I thought he pulled the shower head down and sprayed me, but really the jerk peed all over me. One of our PAs helped me cut my scrubs off (I was NOT going to pull the shirt over my head) and got me some fresh scrubs...I threw away everything I was wearing, right down to my shoes. This patient is a regular and he has a huge bladder capacity...I've seen him FILL two urinals...and it was all over me!
