Then again, another woman called 911 to get help...she couldn't control her child. The dispatcher got very sarcastic with her, thinking it was a crank. But...today we DO see children with severe emotional and violence problems where a 911 call might be needed to save someone's life, and that was what was going on. An adult sized 12 yr old was threatening family with a knife. The dispatcher lost his job.
Goodness - that's scary that they didn't respond to that appropriately. I used to work as a dispatcher (911 + all law enforcement areas because we are a small area) and it was our protocol to send law enforcement to EVERY 911 call even if we think it's a prank. (Sarcasm would have been grounds for immediate dismissal, nqa!!!) I once sent out an officer who was all upset about going out in the county to check on a 911 call because it was kids who called & hung up. Well, it was a good thing he went because it was a 5 yr. old and a 3 yr. old that were left home by themselves!!! Child welfare had to get involved and the children had to be brought into town. 911 hang-ups can be sometimes even more serious than a "real" call, therefore our protocol made us check them all out.
I did have a 911 caller once who wanted to know how he could get ahold of someone by the name of "Deb" who lived in Denver (4 hrs. away). That was all he knew about her, no, he didn't have an emergency, but nobody else could help him and, since we were 911, he thought we could.

He called 3 times in a row and finally a deputy had to go get him to knock it off.
