I was caring for an elderly man one night who was unfortunately suffering from Alzheimers dementia. To prevent him from pulling out tubes/lines, he was in bilateral wrist restraints. As I walked by his room I heard my patient (we'll call him "Joe") calling for help. I went in and attempted to reassure and reorient him. "Joe, you are in the hospital", I remided him. "you just had surgery".

When ever one of my patients is in restraints, I make a point to offer water every time I go in the room. Motioning to his water pitcher I said, "would you like a drink?" Without missing a beat, "Joe" replied, "Hell- if they're still serving I'll have one with ya!"
