I am an office nurse and these are "daily doses of a patients reality"!!!

A familiar scene in the office!!

A new patient arrives and the "Med List" needs to be created.

One day I asked a new patient about her medications.

The patient listed

Accupril
HCTZ
Asa
and WD40!

Now...This is the truth..

I cautiously asked her what she did with the WD40..???
Fearing the worst I held my breath,
She gave me a toothless smile and replied:

"I use it to grease my joints every two weeks!!!!"

Her daughter grinned and attested to the fact saying ...

"Mama always keeps WD40 in her drug cupboard to grease her elbows and knees."

They were both serious :-)

You won't believe this, but I knoew a woman who also used it. she used to spray it on her back for her back pain. Somewhere, I have heard someone say that it does help!! I have not tried it thought. I don't think anyone could stand to be around me with smell !!!...............Jacci

Not only have I heard of people doing this but I have encountered several folks that use M.O.M. instead of deoderant. I'll stick to my Lady Speed Stick.

Had a patient from Romania with very severe back pain due to spinal stenosis. He rated it at 7/10, and neither Tylenol #3 or Oxycet seemed to help. His wife had read somewhere in a book by a doctor from their country that a charcoal poultice would help. [snip]

Sorry to report that this patient has now been diagnosed with multiple myeloma... neither the poultice or anything the doctors in Ontario could do for him was much of a help. What really twists my tail is the length of time he had to suffer before the doctors FINALLY clued in to the fact that there was something else wrong with him other than spinal stenosis. If only someone had listened to the physiotherapist... that's exactly what she said about him on her very first visit!

My deepest sympathy goes out to this gentleman and his family. I am very angry at the way his doctors let him down. It has made me more determined than ever to fight for nurses and other health care providers to have more of a voice in the treatment of patients. This man lay in bed in severe pain for 6 weeks, while his case manager, physiotherapist, wife and nurse (me) did everything they could think of to get the doctor to DO SOMETHING. Even two trips to the ER via ambulance were wasted...he was given a shot of Demerol and sent home!

We had a patient admitted up from ER the other day--while she was waiting for a bed, the nurse walked into the room to find the patient eating Vick's Vapo-rub out of the container. When asked what she was doing, the pt replied, "I have a sore throat." !!!!!!!!

When my grandmother was in ICU with angina, she talked my aunt, who is an RN, into bringing her some kerosene to put on left arm because it hurt so bad. Her room really had a strong smell. And she would also pull her IV pump with her to see who was waiting in the lobby to see her when visiting hours began. She was 84 years old. This was 9 years ago.

This doesn't really have to do with alternative meds but more with patients from way out in the country. I had lady once ask me to unplug her IV pump during a thunderstorm. She was afraid she'd get shocked from an electrical surge!!!

Sorry but I have to react, I don't think it is right to say things like that about people from Rumenia or any other country. What about other Canadians with strange (for us at least) remedies? Other countries, other people, other alternative medicins, so what? And your patient is doing better isn't he?
