Has anyone heard of a waiver for someone who was previously on the weight management program?

A little background... I was enlisted AF for 4 years, and spent the last year on the "fat boy" program. This means on my DD-214 I have a special code. I finish my BSN next year, and am seriously considering getting my commission. Several months ago, I chatted online through the AF website with a recruiter who said that a waiver was possible, but he was unsure of the likelihood.

I am now well below the weight maximum, and in fairly good shape (could be better). I was wondering what the odds were for getting a waiver...

I know I should be contacting a health recruiter, but am leery at this stage in my education. I will do so at a later time, just not yet.

Any recruiters out there, or someone else who went through this process?

I am not a recruiter but am going through the process of going active. One of the things you will have to do is complete a physical at MEPPS. I would think that if you meet height/weight standards at that time then a waiver would not be necessary. If you don't meet the standard then there will probably be issues. I, fortunately and just under the wire, met the standards even with my wife's good cooking!

Not a recruiter at all but, I agree with Tanker, if you mention it on your Meps form and then clarify with the one on one with the physician they may not even request a waiver.

If you make the tape now then I do not think they care that previously you did not make the tape, right?

I think they only thing they would need to know is if you had surgery, broken bones, illnesses and so on, not a history of overweight.

Um, wait, I do not even recall Meps asking if there is a history of being overweight so, this may be a total non-issue.

Remember, Meps even tells you that they are not there for you to seek a second opinion because if you mention that you are curious about xyz then they will think that you are telling them you have a problem with xyz. A history of overwieight? Nah, don't think it needs to be mentioned in meps at all. Unless there is more to it.

Were you separated due to WBFMP, or on your own accord? Under the new AF fitness program standards, if you are separated due to being on the fitness program for too long, then you won't be allowed in. I don't know if WBFMP has the same rules.

But like everyone else has stated, a waiver is always possible.

I separated because my enlistment was up. I just happened to be on the program when I got out. But my DD-214 has some sort of "code" that identifies me. I was just wondering what the possibility of a waiver was...

You will be fine. If you seperated because of weight issues, disability, etc. then you would need a waiver or possibly not allowed to come back in. Now if you seperated because your enlistment was up then you are fine. You will not need to get a waiver because you seperated under a flag (weight management is a flag in the Army). You will not need a waiver.

I would just ask that question for the AF recruiter though since getting into the AF now a days is harder than getting into the Army.

I think it depends on the separation code. You might look up your specific code (you should be able to Google the code) and see what exactly it says it about it. I have a friend that separated for a medical reason and had a special code, but was okay to join again once the medical condition was resolved. Hopefully, you code just means, "As long as they've resolved this issue."

okay, i looked it up...

my reentry code is 4J which means something to the effect of i was in phase I of the weight management program...

i cant see anywhere else where it mentions about me not being eligible to go back in...

thanks for the idea to google it. i never would have thought of that!!!

If, you have an Honorable Discharge with other than RE-1 code you will probably be able to get a waiver as long as you can meet weight standards for your current direct commission packet.
