Question USAF Nurse Corps / ASBC

Quick background: I just graduated nursing school on an AFROTC scholarship and will be stationed at Andrews AFB and going to NTP there early August. All of the other Lts from my program are attending ASBC and I was wondering...

Do nurses get to participate in this training? Do we need to? Is it an opportunity that I should truly seek out?

Thanks so much!!

Hi VPal sorry I can't help with your question because I have no idea what ASBC is but if you don't mind It will be interesting to know (because I am applying to the nurse corps in Dec) if Andrews was your first choice and can you let us know how NTP is.

Thanks

Re: USAF Nurse Corps / ASBC

Hey there,

I think ASBC (aerospace basic course) is for line officers only. Since you are in the medical corps you will attend special training pertinent to your medical field in the Air Force. For example, I know new L&D nurses attend school somewhere (not ASBC) for a few weeks and then attend a 3 month specialty (L&D) training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio before going to their first assignment.

I hope this helps.

- Evan

In general nurses do not go to ASBC. Nurses in the Air Force will generally start out working the floor. Where line officers will generally start out as section commanders or maybe even flight commanders. ASBC is more aimed towards line officers with an emphasis on leadership/management skills and a broader understanding of the Air Force mission.

Re: USAF Nurse Corps / ASBC

Welcome to the Air Force. ASBC is mandatory for all line officers; however, a great experience if you would like to attend as a nurse. I went when I was a 2LT and I enjoyed it. The information pertains more to the general function of the Air Force much of which you may already know from doing ROTC. This is always looked upon as a good thing on perforamance reports and educational history. If allowed the opportunity, do it!!!
