Questions About Airforce Nursing

Hello,

I am a travel nurse, soon to be Airforce nurse. I am prior service, serving 4 years active and 3 years reserve in the Army as an enlisted. I got out and went nursing school and my speciality is O.R.

The other day my recruiter suggested that I might want to try for clinical nurse speciality instead of O.R. nursing. Initially I said no, but I tried to review just what exactly the Airforce considers Clinical Nursing. I mean is it Med-Surg would I be on a floor or what. Also, I not to sure that I want to give up my speciality, because if I wanted it back I am sure I would have to jump through hoops to get it. Any comments or suggestions?

Interesting, I don't see any reason to give up OR as a speciality as long as you have at least one year full time RN expeirence in the OR and you aren't trying to go to some extremely small base with only a couple of OR nurses there.

Clinical nurse 46N is a general nurse it is basically med-surg/clinic etc.

Is there some reason the recruiter suggested this?

Re: Questions About Airforce Nursing

Well as far as bases, I would be happy with anything in Japan or Europe.
As far as my recruiter, well I had to explain to him exactly what it is an O.R. nurse does. He said after I schooled him, he threw that idea out the window.

I guess it came up because he had another officer coming from the navy who was an ICU nurse, but wanted to take a Clinical Nurse position to get a preferred assignment.

Here are the AFSC codes for AF nurses, just make sure that your recruiter is putting you in for the right speciality code.

46AX Nurse Administrator
46FX Flight Nurse
46GX Nurse-Midwife
46MX Nurse Anesthetist
46NX Clinical Nurse
46PX Mental Health Nurse
46SX Operating Room Nurse

Good Luck and keep after your recruiter to keep you updated.
