Question for Military Nurses--esp. Army

I am getting my packet ready to become an army nurse and was wondering what happens after you have fullfilled your sign on contract of 3 years? I know when I was prior enlisted they offered me a huge bonus to re-enlist but I decided to decline and go to college. Do military nurses get offered bonuses to stay in the military? The reason why I ask is because Im not sure if I should join for just 3 years and get the 30,000 college loan repayment or join for 6 years and add an 8,000 dollar bonus to the loan repayment option. I figure if they will give me a bonus to stay active after my 3 years is up it may be worth it to just sign up for the initial 3 years and perhaps get a bigger bonus offer to stay active military. I really hope I am making sense.

thanks

Not sure about the ARMY but in the Navy there is NO bonus after the original one, if offered. Once an officer it is for life, no expiration. If you want out in three years you resign your commission. If you go for 6 years it means you are obligated to do 6 years of pay back the money. You are not in for 3 years of 6 years like enlisted you are in until you resign. You are only obligated for that time period for the cash awards.

I have a lot of friends in the ARMY and Navy, have you even spoken with an Officer from the Air Force?

I would go for 3 years only, after that you may be looking to switch to the Air Force or Navy.
The ARMY is a very honerable service, but you will earn that money Big Time! Good luck.

Thanks LT Dave

I have considered the air force but my husband is in the army and it would make it more difficult to get stationed together. Infact, my neighbor was an air force medical professional recruiter and tells me about the benefits of air force vs army.

Thanks for enlightening me on the difference between officer and enlisted. Now I get it!

Thumbs up

Well if hubby is ARMY and he likes it you may like it also. If you went Airforce and he was ARMY you two would NEVER be together again. Good luck.

There are opportunities to recieve free and darn near free elective plastic surgery. It is very much dependent upon the hospital policy and the budget of the department.

Don't Jump Ship

The bonus is $15,000 right now for nurses to stay.
But bonuses come and go. So it might not be there when you want it. Be leary of Jumping ship to go to the AF or Navy. There is a program called BLUe to Green not the other way around. Nurses are getting passed over let and right for promotion in the blue services.l They are to top heavy. So congress made it easier to come into the Army after getting passed over but it is still hard for them. It is almost impossible to join them as a senior Capt.
