I am in the process of applying to the Army Nurse Corps (been accepted by ANC and now awaiting the waiver process). I was talking with a friend who joined last year and she indicates that promotion from CPT to MAJ is now taking about 10 years. Can anyone comment on that? I know that you are eligible WAY before 10 years. I was looking at 4-6 years TIG for MAJ. Are my glasses rose colored? BTW, they have indicated that I would come in as O-3 per Branch (I have 20 yrs prior mil experience and retired as O-2E).

I actually just spoke to a recruiter today who said avg promotion to Major is 5 yrs. Also, he stated that the competition is just among medical corps, not army wide.

I do not know the "true" timeline due to everyone being different but, would really think that each case is different. Some nurses access in as Captains. You have 20 years experience, your friend has been in for one. I would choose your knowledge and experience regarding military progression through the ranks than hers, any day! Possibly this will be of some help?

According to the link at the bottom of my post, the progression from Captain to Major is five years. However, if someone accesses in as a 2LT then for them the progression from 2LT to Maj is indeed listed as 10 years.

edit again: I see that as an 0-3 you would be one year away from captain, so for you the progression from commission to Major would be six years total, (maximum, right?)

Just wondering, how are you able to come back on active duty when you retired as an 0-2E?

I am able to apply because of waivers and Army needs. They need nurses and I have the skill set they need, BSN and breathing! . It only took filling out an application, getting a physical and getting ANC Board approval. It also helped that 16 years of my time was Reserve/NG. So I have more active time available. They still only guarantee me until age 60, at which time I will have ~16 years active duty time. I can submit a waiver to stay longer and get my 20 year active retirement. If not, then whatever time I have will count towards my Reserve retirement that I can get at age 60.

The Army has brought back other retirees from other career fields that they needed. Very few things are actually written in stone. Many are waiverable.

There is a war going on, everything is waivable, even criminal records aka moral waivers. I am out of the AF and collecting a VA disability, I wonder if they would let me come back to the AF? I know I could go back to the Army but I am not up for the yearly deployments that come every couple of years.
