I'm hopefully trying to get into the nursing school of my choice to graduate with my BSN in 2009, however if I get in I'll graduate in the summer (August at the latest). When does the OIS enroll? How long does the OIS last?

So once I'm done with my BSN and hopefully pass my nursing exam, do I just go into the OIS and do the five weeks there?

Yes. That's what i've been told. I talked a recruiter and he said I go to school and then once I graduate and pass my test, I go to OIS.

You can also have the Navy pay for your school too.

Yeah, talk to a recruiter soon because they will pay for your nursing school. There are different programs, there's the Nurse Candidate program, which pays for school, and then the Nurse Corps, which you can join after you graduate and get your RN.

The NCP will give you a montly pay and a bonus. Plus pay off any loans you may have. Then you can do was is call a direct accession, and you'll get a sign on bonus.
I'm sure you've look at the OIS website. They have classess that begin every month and some times more than once a month. Its for 5 wks, and it isn't easy! It used to be known as fork and knife school. However, its far from that now. Trust me I graduated from it in April.

Possibly they will not just pay off "any" student loans that one may have but, only those directly related to the BSN degree?

My MSN entry program costs $42,000 just for the tuition for the 107 credit hours of two years courses. This doesn't inlcude the tuition for my four years of undergraduate which includes an extra year's worth of pre-requisites. Just noting that loan repayment programs are not always the "end all" well, at least not in my case! I could request the Army loan repayment program of $30,000 twice over, (as instructed I might be able to do after the first year of service, if I went direct commision post graduation) and it still wouldn't cover half of my student loans!

I'm not sure of all the details for loan repayments. I didn't have any, but I know its offered. But if I were guessing. I'm sure it only applies to the nursing school.

It is still nice to read you.

Its okay, I am choosing to apply for the Army Nurse Candidate Program since I have one year left towards completing my RN degree, (as a MSN entry versus a BSN entry). I could use the stipend now much more than the insufficient loan repayment later anyhow.

Yet, it is unknown if Fort Knox will recognize me as a Nurse Candidate with one year left towards graduation because it has seemingly never happened with a MSN entry RN yet.

Good luck, Gennaver! I actually went to a career fair at the local university near me (my school's doing a 2-2 year BSN program and the university had the fair) and the Army was there. I'm thinking I might want to continue military nursing after my time in the Navy's up... what's your opinion?
