Hi to all,
I just graduated from the OBC course at Ft. Sam Houston, TX today (3/18) and am very proud right now.
My question - If there are any 66H (med/surg) nurses out there, I want to know how your first duty assignment was, did you get to pick where you wanted to work, and what is the nurse/patient ratio. Still waiting to hear back from my sponsor.
Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Duty assignments differ from hospital to hospital depending on size and acuity - Medcens will be busier than meddac's, but remote maddacs might have pretty high acuity due to their remoteness from supporting treatment centers.

Generally, you can expect to be VERY busy!

My first assignment was in a hospital in Alaska where we still had open bays and 8 to 16 patients between myself and my 91 C (OK, so, I'm showing my age here!)

Send a formal letter of introduction to the Deputy Commander for Nursing Services stating your interests and desires. The DCN will take that into consideration when she makes an assignment, or will work with you if you initially end up somewhere you really really DON’T want to be. (and please - be mentally prepared for deployment!)

when i graduated OBC my first assignment was to Madigan, which was my first choice. I ended up being assigned to a labor and delivery ward, which was my last choice. It's all about the needs of the army! They did move me to surgery after about 18 months, so it all worked out.

Hope everythings going well for you... You wont have a problem. Ive seen you as a soldier, and if you are as squared away as a nurse, you'll be runnin circles around 'em.
I'm currently inprocessing to Ft. Bragg, and will start inprocessing to Womack next week. Some of my fellow soldiers from the ED have already taken me out.:hatparty:
I'm going to enjoy my time here. I dont start to pick up shifts for another month.

Hey guys,

first of all congrats! I just got back from the CPT's Career Course so I have been away from this board for awhile.

My suggestion is this, make sure your JODSF and your OER support forms are done and have people senior to you review them and provide guidance. Those forms can start you off on the right foot (or can give you a big kick in the pants) in reference to future endeavors.

Also, work on your personal readiness, we are all deploying or redeploying soon.

Being right out of OBC, what things can I place on my support form. My head nurse is a reservist who has been called up for 18 months and I am one of two LTs on my floor(all the other ones are deployed as of Sep 04). If you could give me some guidance, it would be much appreciated.
