Need info on Tripler...Please

Hello, I have gotten orders to go to Tripler in the summer. I am totally anxious on what to expect because I just got into the military and know its not like civilian nursing. I have MANY questions for civilian or military nurses working at Tripler. I would love to be able to PM anyone at Tripler who would be willing to share their experiences or better yet help answer some of my many questions.

Thanks

How cool - congrats...its a big pink (yes pink) building sitting on the side of a mountain - very pretty and gorgeous view! I have been to Hawaii twice (1988 when son was medevac'd to Hawaii from Korea) and then as a tourist in 2003. Very pretty place and doable if you are in the military. Otherwise its expensive...good luck...there will be others along that have been there as nurses. I didn't work there but was happy with the care my son received.

Very big and VERY pink--visible from the plane landing @ Honolulu Airport. My baby sister was born there. I figured out clutch driving backing out of a parking space there.

Not what you wanted to know, I'm sure, but just thought I'd share!

Re: Need info on Tripler...Please

I was there for four months. My family loved Hawaii. The island is cool. You may feel a little isolated if you think about that you are 1,000 miles from civilization, but totally cool place to live and work. The pinkness of the hospital can be overwhelming. You notice that is the number one thing people think of. Anyways..working there is not bad. It depends on what you are evaluating. I would go back there. Only thing is that it is typicaly a 3 year tour if you bring your family. One year at a time would be nice. Enjoy.

I was told growing up the reason it's pink was to help designate it as a hospital during WWII so the Japanese wouldn't bomb it. Who knows if that's true. My cool thing is that my grandpa was one of the foreman who built Tripler.

I have a cousin (civilian now) and his wife, who are both RNs at Tripler and they're very happy there.
