Civilian Navy Nurses

Hi,
I was wondering how difficult it is to be hired as a civilian nurse? Does the Navy offer any part-time positions? Thanks for any information you can offer. Jules

Jules-

Each facility is different in what they offer. If you want a Government Service (GS, soon to be NSPS) job, those can be harder to come-by. Once people get in the jobs they tend to stay a while. However, we do offer contract position all the time. I have 4 coming open in my department this summer, I'm in Bethesda, MD.

Thanks so much for writing. I see the announcements but feel like I need someone to interpret them for me especially the pay grades etc, lol. Any idea what they are looking for over in the Annapolis area?

Jules-

I have no clue what Annapolis might need. I would suspect not much seeing they only have a clinic and not a complete hospital. As a nurse it would be a bit unfulfilling, unless you are looking for slow-paced clinic work. I'm in the ED at Bethesda and that is where my contract positions are coming open.

Hello:

Are your contract postions for people with a lot of experience? Do you take newbies? I'm guessing that this is civilian? What kind of shifts do the nurses work? For how long? How does this pay?? Thank you LCDR DAN and I hope that all is going smooth @ home!!!

Re: Civilian Navy Nurses

Its-

Unfortunately, you're right these positions normally require some experience. The contract is currently still being finalized so I'm not sure if they have made any concessions for new nurses. I personally don't mind new grads in the ED, but I don't have full control of the contract. The facility is making the contract based on some of my input. We work 12hr shifts and do days and nights, rotating. Yes, you're right these are civilian positions. I'll keep you all up to date as we go along.

Re: Civilian Navy Nurses

LCDR Dan;

Thank you very much for your reply. Maybe by the time it is all worked out I will have enough experience. I'm not a new nurse, but very new to the ER. Plus I would have to mapquest it... I bet you it would be too far. A friend of mine worked at a military hospital in the ER in Cali. and loved it. In my new ADVAnCe For nurses the National Naval Medical Center has a add for nurses. They have a new unit TBI/pTsD unit. This would be very rewarding too. I just wish that it wasn't so far away. HOW is your wife doing?????? I know that you are doing a fabulous job holding down the fort. It must be diffucult. Aren't you in grad school??? Well take care... and thanks again.....

Re: Civilian Navy Nurses

I am also seekiing info about Bethesda civilian nursing positions. I called today and they discussed the TBI unit which is new. Any and all info on this would be appreciated as to how the working conditions are, the pay, the environment, etc. I am a relatively new grad with some experience. I'm also a military wife and would be so excited to get back to this -- I think.

We live in the Fairfax county area close to Tysons, so the drive would not be all that bad.

Do you work alongside Navy nurses? What are corpsman? I'm starting to pick up on a few of these terms.

Thanks for any and all info. We go there a lot for our TRICARE needs as well.

Re: Civilian Navy Nurses

Sound-

Yes, I do work with Navy nurses, I am on as well. Currently, I have 7 that I supervise as well as 11 civilians. The TBI is still getting put together, so some the question you have can't be answered yet, yes that new. I think they are still doing construction on it. Navy Corpsmen are the complete unsung heroes of the naval service. they work alongside the nurse to assist in providing care. they fill the void between nursing assistant and LPN in the civilian sector. However, they have some specialized training for when they are in the combat zone, very versatile individuals.

Re: Civilian Navy Nurses

Hello Dan,

I have some questions about the Naval Medical Center and have recently interviewed there for the TBI/PTSD unit which I believe is a very unique opportunity but have some questions that I am not comfortable discussing in the forum. Would it be possible for you and I to get in contact so that I can ask you some of these questions? I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.
