Hello,
I have mentioned this in two threads already but, think it deserves its own thread.

As someone who is just going through the recruitment steps and interested in active duty I am very, very intersted to know whatever I can about deployment. It seems to me to be nearly a gaurantee but, I still am very curious about it.

Would my base preference give a clue to where my potential deployment would be? How long are nursing deployments? Looking forward to replies.

In most cases, but not 100% of the time; Active Duty involves an assignment to an Army Medical Center in CONUS [ Madigan Army Medical Center (MAMC) at FT Lewis, Brooke Army Medical Center, FT Sam Houston, etc.], or OCONUS [Tripler Army Medical Center at FT Shaftner, Hawaii, for example] along with being PROFIS'd to a deployable unit [i.e. a CSH, or Combat Support Hospital]. In otherwords, you work full-time at a fixed military medical facility [i.e. MAMC] and at any time could get military orders to deploy overseas with a field medical unit [i.e. a CSH] for a peroid of at least 12 months.

No, it really does not matter where your assigned regards to a fixed military medical facility in relation to a designated CSH.

Nursing deployments are generally 12 to 18 months. Unless you are a CRNA then 3 months

Hi,thanks for the reply.

I am listing FTs Lewis, Sam Houstin and Walter Reed for my base preferences. I have a year until graduation and will have this time to arrange for my three cats to be taken care of while I am at training and deployed, (looks like they may have to stay in Chicago rather than come with me to whichever base I go to).

This is what I will anticipate then. Do you know about student loans and being in the military? Are they deferred until discharge or is that just wishful thinking on my part?

Student loans are not diferred but there are loan repayment programs if you're willing to commit a certain number of years to active duty. Its a good option if you are planning to remain active for a while anyway.

Actually, turns out that certain student loans do qualify for Military deferment.

I do not remember where I found the details, think it was through the FAFSA site, so I just did a quick google to pull up whatever I could on it and found this.

edit to add: I am also aware of something where if they are student loans incurred after 9/11 that they are eligible for another type of deferment as well.

I thought that loan diferment for military only applied if you are depolyed, but the wording in the link you provided is not that specific...so it may apply for any active duty....but it does say that diferment is only up to three years so it wouldn't be until you are discharged because your commision is indefinite...meaning that you keep your comission until you resign it (unless of course you are dishonorably discharged) and if you are a career military you will have that commission for 20+ years. Anyway, thanks for the info...good to know.

Also, it just came down from surgeon general that army nurse corp deployments for those in profis positions (which is almost all of us) have been changed to 180day rather than the 15 months that they have been! I hope you get the assignment you want...I'm at Tripler in HI now...it was my third choice.

Yeah, imagine that, six months if your are deployed! However, someone explained it to me that I think its longer if you are assigned/profis's to a unit, you stay with them.

Yes, I did get the assignment that I wanted, which was listed at my third choice in the end, (BAMC).

The memo that we recieved said that all profis assignments (meaning that you are deployed with a unit that you are not stationed with)will be relieved after 180 days...but if you are origionally assigned a unit that deploys (like if you are assigned to a brigade combat team or something)you stay with them...but if you are assigned to BAMC then you will deploy as a profis which falls under the 180 day deployment.
