I have worked in the hospital and private practice for almost four years. I wanted to experience different areas of nursing, but have decided what would really make me happy is to start my own business. However, I really don't know how to go about doing that. I know it takes a lot of work and time. I have many ideas, but just don't know where to begin.

How you start will depend on what type of business that you want. No one will be able to help you until you decide what you want to do. It has t be something that you really want to do, then you go from there.

Thank you for your advice. I am a pediatric nurse, currently working in a private office. I found that many parents call the office to speak with me regarding their sick kids with a fever, sore throat, vomitting, etc. I thought of maybe starting a parental clinic. Teach parents on what to expect when their child is sick. Also, I thought of maybe teaching nannies, day care providers, au pairs. I'm just nervous about starting my own business because I have no MBA background.

Some basics that you need to consider:
1. Liability insurance, and where you will get it from.
2. Are you going to rent space?
3. How are you going to charge?
4. Will it be private pay or will you bill insurance?
5. Who will you market this to and how?
6. Start up funding...........will you be doing this full-time or start off part-time?

These are things that you will need to calculate and see if it makes it feasible for you to do.
What type of educational background do you have? Will you get referrals from physicians?

Have you devised a business plan?

Just some quick thoughts that have come to mind................

i think giving inservices at elemantary schools would
be great too. So many children get sick from other
kids at school. Really all they need is to be educated
on handwashing and not sharing personal items. We would
see fewer sick kids and use fewer sick days caring for them.
You should see if a brand like Purell would donate to your
education program with samples or coupons. GOOD LUCK

Thank you for the great suggestions. They will come valuable during this planning phase. I will surely keep all of this in mind. I thought of starting part time for now with the help of a coworker, who have expressed interest in my ideas.

A good place to start is SCORE.. If there is a group in your city make an appointment with them.. I was thinking of starting a business some years ago and they helped me even though I never did start the business.

They will help you set up a business plan and help you with laws and all those things.. It's free so it can't hurt.

If I have malpractice liability insuance. If I am incorporated do I need additional insurance on my business if I am the only employee. My business is incorporated.

Depends on what your business is going to be. To work in a hospital, they require general liability with fire and water and auto, 1/3 million is standard. And of course professional malpractice insurance, mine is 1/6, but I believe most hospitals only require 1/3. Some may require fidelity insurance as well. Fidelity insurance and/or bonding is more likely in home health. Requirements would be the same as a sole proprietor.

Well, have you ever heard of the small business development center (SBDC)? It is a federally funded program located in every county in every state. It is usually affiliated with a community college or university. This program was developed by the government to promote the growth and also to help existing small businesses be successful. Reason for this?? Small businesses are a tremendous asset to the economy and create thousands of jobs thus economy. You do not need an MBA to start your own business or any business knowledge for that matter. These counselors will guide you the entire step of the way, from creating a business plan to marketing. From start to finish! I know this because I am currently working with a business counselor from the SBDC to launch my own business in the Phoenix, AZ area. I do not have any prior business experience. This program is entirely free!! Business counselors hold business degrees and own or have previously owned a successful business. Depending on the type of business you would like to launch, they will match you with a counselor who has experience in that particular field. Again, there is no cost to you...this is a free service available to the public. Look up the Small business development Center or SBDC on the web and you will see what an amazing program it is.
