Re: Would you call this teacher's behavior "abuse"?

Here's a little story for you..........
The second day of nursing school we were given a pop quiz and I distinctly remember two of the questions:
1. Who won the square dancing championship last night? (I've never seen square dancing in my life)
2. What is the name of the college president?

I almost quit on my second day. This particular instructor continued with these types of questions on every test in addition to the regular material. I HATED it; however, I'm am so glad I never said a word. We lost about half our class the first year--not all voluntarily. Now, I've been working as a nurse for about 13 years. Was it worth it? Yes! My recommendation is to simply focus on your goal. You will probably be faced with tons of BS while in your program and you know it is ridiculous, but do you really want to ask a question to your instructor that will make her think about you during her away-from-work hours? Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks, all of you - all great points, and all great advice - this has been a great posting for me, and I appreciate all your advice.....to "allthingsbright" - would you mind taking the trouble to tell us about some of the worse things you've said you've seen as a nursing student? I would love to hear about them, and perhaps it will help me feel better about my situation. Do tell!!!!

Military spouse - I can't believe my ears...I thought that my paper to write about listening to teacher was ridiculous, but being tested on extracurricular activities around the college, and having that count toward your grade - "The Humanity!!!"

Just do it but spend no more than 15 minutes on it. Fulfill the requirement because she holds the power and it's not worth your time to argue. This won't stop you from getting your nursing license and that's your ultimate goal.

I would save this thread, though, and after you graduate, take it to the School's Nursing Director. Ask her if this is what she wants her former students to tell other prospective nursing students about her program. She may have no idea how archaic her nursing instructor's methods are....but she should. Instructors wonder why they don't get respect from students and the answer is in this thread... Hang in there....your license is so close!

It's a 1 page paper and you're almost done...what does making waves about it get you?
I can write a 1 page paper in 15 minutes...get over it.

omg, where would i begin? ya know, i would tell some stories, and i started to type them out, then i remembered people i go to school with come here and would recognize who i am talking about, so i gotta keep my mouth shut. yes, i am afraid to talk, and yeah, it is that bad.

suffice it to say, s$%^ happens, so do as you're told--jump through those hoops baby, keep out of other people's business and graduate! YOU CAN DO IT!

At least my teachers were respectful.
Plug on. This is a blip on the radar of life. Watch for the 747s, that's all.

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everyone needs to remember that the school probably accepts a certain number of students, but may only be approved for x number for different clinicals and may only intend to graduate x number of students. I always felt, particularly that first year, that any excuse was used to weed out students. Unfortunate, but true. Hopefully not as true today as at that time, but I don't know.
