Act like they have never been a nursing student before....I started my new job as an extern monday and some of the nurses won't even speak/look in my direction when the PCS introduced me and told them that if they had any procedures to get me to go in with them. Are we that big of a hassel? I mean, yeah it may be a little awkward having someone follow you around, but it should make them feel great being able to teach a future nurse. Some procedures we won't even get to see in clinicals and that's what makes this position rewarding for students. Ahhhh, sorry just felt the need to vent here.

THere are some who are just #*&@&! I recently came into contact with one who would routinely ignore me if I asked a question or made a comment. She was on orientation herself and was a know-it-all. Everytime the more experienced nurses would tell her something she would cut them off with "i know" or "I already did that..." annoying as all get out. However most of the nurses were more than happy to try and teach and didn't seem put out by having a student around.

Good luck. If you prove yourself to be helpful and a hard worker, perhaps they'll come around. Try not to take it personally.

Don't have expectations on how they "should" behave and perhaps you'll have an easier time. I took a similar job the last six months of nursing school and they didn't roll out the red carpet for me. Didn't they know who I was and that I was the most important person there?

Seriously, make the most of your experience. In time as they get to know you'll I'm sure it will be fine.

My unscientific experience has been that I have seen more problems with ones who were nursing students RECENTLY than more experienced nurses. Maybe it is a form of hazing? who knows. I get my work done and try not to worry about the other nonsense going on.

My first day of clinical the only person who did the eye-roll-and-sigh thing turned out to be a student from my school doing her senior practicum... Everyone else was (and continues to be) terrific.
