Re: who is more proficient in giving bedside care?

I think it really depends on the person not the program level they went through.

Neither. Nurses with diplomas, ADNs, and BSNs are all capable of giving bedside care. The extra knowledge has little to do with the mechanics of nursing, but with extra information. ADNs do not take courses in public health nursing, for example.

This is why nurse applicants of all educational levels take the same NCLEX.

I don't think you will find anything that would be considered "factual". I think you could possibly find some opinion related write-ups but that's about it.

Also wanted to point out...a diploma program does now equal a 2nd degree course. There are many people in diploma programs that do not have a previous degree.

Also, when you say "basic degree", are you referring to an associate's degree or a bachelor's degree (BSN)? My mind immediately jumps to BSN as the "basic" since a diploma and ADN is the same level just a different route to get there.

So I don't think the question will be able to be answered with anything concrete and I don't think it's actually possible to attempt to answer it without some clarifications.

I will tell you there are opinions on this...no doubt.

I know people who believe nurses should go through a hospital based RN program because they get more hands on, direct education.

I know other people who think that a nurse has to be a BSN...and others will come back and say "yeah because that extra Literature, Gym, Arts & Humanities and so on classes really make a huge different in nursing" showing they think the BSN isn't necessary (not saying it's a waste though).

Opinions are out there. I don't think you will find facts.

If I were you, I would keep on researching. There are a few studies out their correlating patient outcomes with nursing education.

Here's one to get you started:

Educational Levels of Hospital Nurses and Surgical Patient Mortality
Linda H. Aiken; Sean P. Clarke; Robyn B. Cheung; Douglas M. Sloane; Jeffrey H. Silber JAMA. 2003;290:1617-1623.

and this study was found to be flawed. It did not take into account may variables including patient acuity, staffing levels, among others.

I certainly took public health courses in my ADN program, in fact it was my absolute favorite clinical rotation too.
