Exclamation Who is at fault here?

We have a lot of issues come up in our program. Lucky me, I'm the class representative. Here's the latest.

Yesterday we all received an email telling us that we should have turned in a paper on April 1st, but we were allowed to electronically submit it before May 16th and not be penalized since no one turned it in.

A bit more background. It is for a class we are not enrolled in yet, the only information about the paper was given to us last year (May 6, 2007) at orientation and we were told to place all the information in our portfolios that are to remain in the Nursing Department office.

Almost everyone forgot about the paper because it had been a year since we had heard of it. It was not mentioned at all during the Summer 07 semester, Fall 07, or Spring 08. Now they are telling us we could lose points in a class we will not take until Spring 09.

We did not even have access to the criteria for this paper until she sent the email yesterday.

One girl did do the paper because she checked out her portfolio over spring break and saw the due date. However, she did not turn it in because no where does it say who to turn it into or if it even needs to be turned in.

One would think that an email could have been sent out a month BEFORE the due date instead of after.
Any similar tales?
I'm meeting with them today to discuss our options about an extention. You just can't expect a paper this big in the middle of finals week.
Thanks
~cxJvak

Re: Who is at fault here?

Oh, sorry for the confusion. We graduate Spring 09. We started nursing classes Summer 07. We were told about the paper in Spring 07. It was due April 2008. That's how backwards this is.

Weird. Never heard of anything like that before. With everything students have going on in NS, find it hard to believe that one would be expected to remember.

Anyhoo, maybe you can negotiate to have it done before next semester???????

While I kind of sympathize with you guys, I've also got a couple of college degrees and have been in college a lot. If there is one thing I've learned the hard way, and that you guys have just now learned the hard way, it's to periodically check program syllabi and written program requirements. No one is going to take you by the hand like they did in high school and say, "Remember to do such and such." It's a hard lesson, but I bet the smarter and more organized ones among you won't make it again.

Re: Who is at fault here?

I guess its hard to say who is at fault, it is hard to recall something that was assigned a year ago. But then they did give you another 1.5 months to turn it in, which is more than fair.

Re: Who is at fault here?

After learning this the hard way, I have to go with Daytonite here. You're in nursing school, which is a bit like being sent down a stream without a paddle. You have to obsessivly keep track of EVERYTHING, as no one is going to do it for you.
I hope everything goes ok!

IDK, in my school, you better jump through whatever hoops they tell you to. I give you kudos for being the class rep. You couldn't pay me to.
