Taking the NCLEX in a different state

We are going to be moving to another state as soon as I graduate, and I wondered if I will be able to take the NCLEX there or if I have to wait and do it here.. The hospital system where I want to work only hires new grads in January and June and so since I'll graduate in mid May, I was wondering what I would have to do to get licensed in my new state.... I tried to search the internet but didn't really find anything that helpful. Do you have to get licensed in the state you completed school first or can you get licensed in another state if you establish residency there?

you can apply to any state as long as you meet their requirements. You do not have to take it in the state that you trained. All requirements will be on their website

beachbum3. . .go to the website of the state board of nursing of the state you are moving to. You can get a link to it from allnurses (the link is on the "Links" button above). On that state board site, look for the information on how to get a license in that state. You are looking for the information on how to get a first time license. Open and download any file with instructions and the application on how to do that. It will contain the instructions on how to register to take the NCLEX in that state. Just follow the directions. I would encourage you to start the process as soon as possible since there are things you will have to do on your own that your nursing school would normally do for you in the state you now reside. You will need to arrange for transcripts to be sent to the new state from your nursing school and probably for some kind of fingerprint and criminal background check to be done. Just do as instructed. Good luck. Have a safe move.

I completed an LVN/LPN program in California, and moved to Texas 1 month after graduation. I took the NCLEX in Texas, even though I had completed the schooling in California. NCLEX can be taken at any testing center where it is offered, regardless of where you attended school. If you completed school in New York, it would be perfectly acceptable if you took NCLEX in Hong Kong (because it is offered there).

I should mention that I took NCLEX in Texas, but for the California boards. Therefore, I received initial licensure in California, and endorsed this license into Texas.
