Worried - question for FCCJ nursing students.
|
|
I currently have a C in AP1. I have a choice of getting a D and re-taking the class or keeping the C but I hear that in the state of Florida you need to have a B or better to apply for the program. Is that true? should i re-take the class again or go for AP2 and try to get an A? What happens if im not accepted in the program?

Depends on what your other grades are. I know of some people who got a c on some pre-reqs and were able to get in. Of course you must have a's in more of the others to make up for that C. It looks really great to have a's or b's in microbio and your anatomy classes since they are worth the most. I also suggest that you get a NAT book, study hard and ace that. A lot of people who make excellent grades under estimate the NAT. And some people like myself made mostly b's, ACED the NAt and were a shoe in. You must also understand the rules of the NAT. Unless they have changed it you dont get marked off for wrong answers, just given points for correct answers. SO dont skip questions and answer every single one. You usually take it on computer, but there is a paper and pen version which I took that I found a lot easier to go fast and back track if I needed to. The computer locks you out and you arent able to go back once you submit a cetain question. Its basically an aptitude test. So get the book and learn how to answer correctly, be consistent, and brush up on your anatomy/microbio... the spelling section does not count, so dont worry about it. Of course you should verify all this information before you take it to granted, but it works for me im almost graduated. If I were you, I'd take the C.... and focus hard on everything else and get A's, espcially in ap2 and microbio! and study hard for the nat.... its easy to get in the top 95 percentile in every section if you know how to take the test correctly.

Now that I read this post, I too am very worried! I missed getting a B in AP1 by 28 points!! My class was very hard and it was online! I really think I made a mistake by taking it online. For Fall 2008 I have already registered for an in class AP2 course to be able to get a B or better in the class!
Do you really think it would be hard to get into the program? After the grades get posted even with the C I will have a 3.25 (2 A's/1 B/1C) for this semester. I am just very worried now! I have taken the Micro Lab at my other school and got an A...but will have to retake it again since FCCJ we have to take it as one...should I worry about getting a C in AP1?
Do you know how much a C is worth when adding them into the points system?
Thanks for listening!

I forget exactly how the point system works, but you should get the pamphlet from fccj north campus. That is where the nursing school is and they can help you with all the procudures. There is a formula they use to figure it out. Since micro is worth 4 credits, if you got an A than you get 4 points for an A x 4 (for 4 credits), a B in humanities... would give you 3x3, and so on.... its something similar to that. And than you multipy your NAT score by some decimel and add the points altogether. The only pre reqs they take points for that I know of is.... a&P1, a&p2, microbio, humanities, a math algebra 1 or higher, and i think maybe ENC101... but im not sure. If I were you, I would try to take Maria Oehler at south campus in the fall. Her class is blocked out right now.... but if you wait to dropdate and go on first thing the next morning, you will be in. She is excellent teacher, knows her stuff and gives great reviews... if you dont get a's on her tests, you simply did not put enough time into studying what she gave you. A good second choice would be cheeseman who teaches downtown. I have heard good things about him as well. Im not dogging any other teachers, but the two I mentioned should be simple to ace if you are serious about getting into the nursing program. I wouldnt be worried if you had a C in just one thing. Just do great in everything else, and do great on the NAT. Also they give you a few points for any hospital experience. And you might consider being an CNA,or PCT at a local hospital even for just a short time, they will give you a few points for that. Also summer is more difficult to get in because they admit less students, so try and get your application in for fall or spring if possible. As for nursing school, the first semester is a killer, than its all down hill. But it sounds like you need to go to north campus, they have information meetings you can go to that give u heads up on everything.

At my counseling session at FCCJ, they advised us that they DO NOT give any extra points for being a CNA.

yea i think they used to give points but too many people were getting just their cna license (like i did when I was going to apply to SJRCC). So now it seems they will use the work credit if you were trained as a nursing assistant at FCCJ and are/were working
