Re: psych nursing ugggh!

I have a BS in psych, and even I didn't like my psych rotation. Learn from theory, and learn from the experience on the psych floor - you don't have to love each rotation, as others have said. I've had many pts on my med-surg and ICU rotations who also had pysch problems, and I'm sure I will in OB this summer as well. You just need to learn the disorders and the main treatments and meds, because your pts might be on them anywhere you work. I learned a lot from my psych rotation, including the fact that I never want to work on a psych unit. Therefore, it was valuable to me.

I did not like my psych clinical rotation either. I guess I just hated the idea of being on a locked unit. I did learn a lot while there. I really loved the idea that we did not have to wear our student nurse uniform. We wore a nice shirt and dress pants under our lab coat.

Re: psych nursing ugggh!

I am learning alot from my psych class. that part I really don't mind and even find it really interesting. I just don't like working on the psych floor. last week I was put in the childrens unit and left there while the staff left the floor. most of the kids had some sort of aggressive behavior and I was a little scared some of these 12 year olds were big! when the charge nurse found out she was not a happy camper!

Re: psych nursing ugggh!

Well I survived my psych rotation. I had my evaluation yesterday and I got a 100%. I am so stoked! Yesterday I had to help a kid that was in kindergarten that had behavioral problems. I was reading him a story and he leaned against me and started patting my leg. He was so cute. Kind of reminds me why I'm going to become a nurse. Things like that really pull at your heart strings! Next week OB woo hoo!!

Re: psych nursing ugggh!

I think most of us are not looking to be mental health nurses, me included. I just finished my psych rotation and although it wasn't my favorite, I took away a better understanding of those afflicted with mental illness and felt alot of compassion for those individuals. I also learned to become comfortable using silence as a facilitator in communication and will be able to apply therapeutic communication much better in patient care.

Just get through it and know you will never have to step foot in a mental health setting again!

Re: psych nursing ugggh!

Yesterday was my last clinical day. Thank goodness. But over all I did learn alot concerning dealing with my patient. like my instructor said you can use psych nursing in all aspects of nursing. I now know this to be true. Everyone have a GREAT day!!

Re: psych nursing ugggh!

Funny, I kind of relate well to the pts in psyc care. Not real sure what that says about me. I've dealt with a number of pts with "issues" on my med/surg floor, so you will run into the pts on any floor. I feel the same way about OB, really enjoyed it once I got there, but I would have rather eaten a live toad before hand. To each their own. That's why there are apples and oranges.

Re: psych nursing ugggh!

I'm the exact opposite! I love my psych rotation and even signed up for off-site on psych. On the opposite end I have OB next semester and I am just dreading it. I have 2 children and that has been enough OB for me. I've gone into L&D with friends to be of emotional assistance and did fine, but I just would rather be in some (any) other rotation. It will be my last year next year so I just have to get through it. But UGH!!!

Re: psych nursing ugggh!

Oh I am so excited about going into OB. I have wanted to be a OB nurse since I was about 14 years old. I haven't decided if I want to work in L&D or in the NICU. this is the clinical rotation I have been looking forward to.
