Question? - Prioritizing Nursing Diagnosis

The other day I took a test where the question was What is the priority nursing diagnosis. One of the anwser was Risk for Delayed Development. I did not pick that because I thought risk for should never be a priority, and I got it wrong. Can a risk for diagnosis be a priortiy nursing diagnosis?

Re: Prioritizing Nursing Diagnosis

Yes. Risk for's can be priority. I used Risk for Aspiration as my #2 a couple weeks ago at clinical and did very well on that postwork. Had that patient aspirated there would have been a plethora of issues that could have come on. Therefore, preventing that from happening was a very high priority for my patient.

Hopefully this makes sense, LOL!

Re: Prioritizing Nursing Diagnosis

well IMO, priorities should be those that directly affect the ABCs of the patient. aspiration, breathing, airway being compromised, circulation issues, bleeding. remember that hierarchy of needs? The physiological should come before the mental, emotional, spiritual.
