Concerns - Positive PPD

Hi all, I received my letter of acceptance two weeks ago (whaaahooo!) and was told I had to have a PPD done and the results submitted by August 15th. I had a positive PPD back in 2000, but never had TB, and my doctor put me on nine months of INH. I have a letter stating this information and that all chest x-rays to this point have been clear. I have tried to get information on how the nursing department wants to handle this but I keep getting told they are gone for the summer.

I was wondering has anyone else run into this or know someone that has been in this situation and how did their school handle it. I am really scared now because I can’t seem to get an answer and am afraid this may keep me out of nursing school.

Re: Positive PPD

As long as you have a negative chest x-ray you will be fine. They may require to have an updated chest x-ray but that is the only problem that I think you should have. Good luck getting this taken care of.

Re: Positive PPD

Thanks. I was hoping that was all it would be, but I wish I could get a definite answer from somebody at the school.

Re: Positive PPD

Make a copy of your results and get doctors letter and have them sent to the school. That way they wil be on file. We have at least one person each year test positive in my class and after the chest x-ray we are set to go.

Re: Positive PPD

agree with all the aboe posters. Have a resp. therapist in my incoming group that I had a class with before. She brought this up when we had our registration meeting because she tests positive also. They also told her to just to have a copy of her results and get a current x-ray. Like with all the other records they want, make extra copies for yourself

Re: Positive PPD

Hi, are you from another country other than US? Alot of countries vaccinate children with BCG (anti-TB) which will give you a false positive reading. As the other posters have stated, as long as you have a clear CXR you SHOULD be fine, and if not, plead your case to higher authorities. GL

Re: Positive PPD

No I'm not from another country. I just grew up very close to the Mexico boarder.
