Re: passed first drug calc test!!!

Congratulations. I also suck at Math. Just out of curiosity, what exactly was on the test? I have thought about possibly doing some examples here and there to keep brushed up on my math.

Our drug calc test had a lot of converting grams to milligrams and lbs to kilograms and visa versus, as well as calculating tablets. There were no IV drip rates on this test but it will be on the next test where you have to get 90% to pass. It's not so bad. Just concentrate on your conversions, for lbs, ounces, milligrams, grams, liters, and mL. Also concentrate on converting inches to centimeters. It wasnt half as bad as my College Algebra class which I absolutely hated. At least there were no graphing a coordinate point (as in Algebra).

Good luck!

Re: passed first drug calc test!!!

i took the same thing i sopose
the only question that sticks out and im not too sure if i got right went something like this
the patient needs 0.005 g of medication, the tablet comes in 2.5 mg what amount should you give? i think its half a tablet but then i changed it last minute..what do you guys think?

Re: passed first drug calc test!!!

bklyngirl...

Actually, if the patient needs .005 grams (or 5 mg), you should give 2 tablets (if each is 2.5 mg) to give the proper amount of medication...

I always write down my thought process for these questions (no matter how simple) because I find it so easy to get tripped up.

WANT: 0.005 grams x (1000 mg / gram) = 5 mg
HAVE: 2.5 mg = (1/2) what I want...

so DOSE = 2 x (2.5 mg) tablets

A
