Ortho/ Neuro

I am a first semester nursing student and I start clinicals next week. I am assigned to Ortho/ Neuro. Can anyone give me a head's up as to what to expect?

Also, does anyone else using Perry and Potter's Fundamentals of Nursing book refer to it as Harry Potter? It just makes me happy.

On an ortho/neuro unit you will have patients who have orthopedic and neurological problems. The ortho problems are usually fractured bones or orthopedic surgical procedures such or knee or hip replacements. Patients will have had surgical repair of fractures of all kinds of bones and may have casts, external fixation devices, splints or be in traction. You may also have people with spinal injuries as well as they are considered both ortho and neuro related. Neuro patients may or may include people who have had strokes or brain surgery. I worked on a neuro unit years ago and we had patients who had spinal surgery, any surgery related to the repair of a nerve, brain surgery, head injuries of any type (open or closed), seizures and headaches that were being investigated. We had a lot of patients who were in for overnight observation of head concussions after accidents. I saw every kind of seizure there is that a person can have.
