Has anyone taken online science courses? I have to take Biology and Chemistry ( i didn't take them in high school or college) this summer and they are offered online...are these courses that I should be taking one on one or is online fine?

Any advice would be great, thanks in advance!!

Re: Online Science Courses

How do they do the lab portion? I know our nursing program required biology, chem, A&P, micro with lab.

Re: Online Science Courses

I did biology and microbiology online.
The biology had us doing labs at home that I remember doing in a lab in college (only 20 years between the 2 classes!). Not difficult.
The micro was better... A slide in microscope looks a lot like the view on a computer monitor...
Learning staining slides without wet-ware is harder... I had done it in the Navy so I knew what I was supposed to do and the results I would see.

Just remember online classes demand more effort that in-person classes.
You have to discipline yourself to put in all the time *you* need to read/study and then do the homework.

I had to go in to the school for mid-terms and final (to prevent fraud we had to have picture identification too).

Re: Online Science Courses

I have done several more fluffy classes like Growth and Development online and they were great. I did Chemistry, no lab, online during the summer session and it nearly killed me. Good luck.

Jules, was it just too difficult online?

How do you do labs with an online class?

Re: Online Science Courses

My school does labs at home as well. I'm taking A&P1 this summer. I found the syllabus online and it says that we will use A.D.A.M. (anatomy dissection software) and online physiology experiments. It also said that we will use household goods to do experiments.

I'm doing some pre studying already. I took A&P years ago and I'm using my old textbook and the syllabus to create notecards for studying later. I would be lying if I said that I'm not a little worried about taking the class online but since I've already taken it once, slept through most classes, and still pulled a C. I'm confident that I'll do better this time.

For me it was very difficult since I couldn't ask any real time questions, there was no lecture so I was pretty much just trying to figure it out myself from the book. I only had high school chem which I got a C in and it was 20 years before so I didn't have a decent background. I did manage to pass but in hindsight I'm not sure I would do it again especially not in a shortened summer semester.

I didn't need a chem lab for my pre-reqs so I didn't do one but I will have to take that component for my BSN. I'm doing it in a classroom, lol.

Re: Online Science Courses

I took an online summer chemistry course. There were actually computer labs we did @ home and answered to turn in as well as the studying we had to do. We then went in every other weekend to take a test and do a class lab.

I am a real science dummy and managed to get a B in the course. If I had been more familiar with the metrics system, I probably could've pulled an A. I had little choice in taking this class during the summer as I needed to complete it in order to apply for our program; had I waited, I couldn't have applied until after the fall classes were complete.

The trick to this was that the instructor came highly recommended as a great classroom teacher and I found that that also translated well to his online organization and effectiveness.

If you can find out something similar, it may be worth checking in to.

Best wishes!!
