older students-summer enrichment

Hello....

Anyone else that is starting in the fall that will be attending a summer enrichment program? (or anyone that has attended one of these!)

I was currently "invited" not required as soom students are to attend this. Now when it was explained to me on the interview...this was for the "really needs help" type students as they need to know time management, study skills etc...

However talking to my DH I'm thinking maybe I should go...it's for about 4 days and the first day is an overview of the program , helpful hints, math review, clinical preperation, and a student nurse study group will speak. The next day is medical terminology (oh I need that!) and then time management (there I think I don't need that) The next day is class note taking, generational differences, reading skills and study skills (really don't think I need any of these but maybe I'm kidding myself! :P and the last day is test taking skills , student nurse panel, closing cermony and prizes.

I was thinking I would probably benefit from the 1st two days..but not so sure about the rest...then again I could be kidding myself. I went back to CC to do my prereqs while holding down a full time job/raising child...so I think I got the time management part down But maybe it's all beneficial and I need to just get over myself See I'm thinking that it will mostly be the fresh out of high school kids that really do need this...but I'm really starting to think I'm kidding myself! Also this is seperate from the orientation...that's the following week and manadatory of course.

Thoughts?

TIA

Michele

I think you should do it. Any help you can get will be to your advantage. If you don't do it, and then struggle a bit later, you will deeply regret not having taken the help that was offered.

As the old saying goes, "Pride goeth before a fall."

Do you have to attend all the sessions? They had a kind of "welcome to nursing school" program last summer before we started that ran over 2 or 3 weekends....attendance at all or any of the sessions was optional. I went for all the sessions (I'm a bit anal like that), but was kind of sorry I wasted some of that time....on the other hand, I met a lot of folks from the program from several campuses and got a bit of a head's up about what to expect. In addition, we got several great handouts, a copy of "How to Survive and Maybe Even Love Nursing School' ($24.95 value) and lunch for all sessions!!

I think if you can kind of pick and choose when to go after the first "class", I'd definitely give it a go. As you have read from this board, NS is a whole 'nother animal and any help/insight/guidance you can get will be helpful.

Re: older students-summer enrichment

I think that you should do it also.. Im starting the program in July and my program is offering a Nursing BOOTCAMP. Im starting my second day. 36 hrs total, T- th 9-12:30 for 3 weeks. Some of the things discussed are common sense but hey what do I have to loose. Its seems that I will have an upper hand on some issues. That can't be a bad thing. I work nights anyway and I want to be as prepared as possible. Im working while in the program and time management is one of my major concerns.. Its free, we don't have any homework, and we have got some useful info so far.

Good Luck
Laura

Unless I were really busy, I would attend. Why not?
