So after an interview where the nurse manager forgot we were scheduled for last week and getting up at 0700 for an interview at 0800 this morning, I've been hired by a local hospital to become a nursing student 1 (there are two levels and I can be a "2" after I finish Med-Surg) in the outpatient surgical unit. I'll learn how to do intake assessments (checked off by an attending nurse, of course), potentially scrub in for the general OR, and help with PACU, patient discharge, and follow-up calls to patients the day after surgeries. It's PRN and they're very accommodating to my school schedule, with more hours available during the summer. It was either outpatient general surgery or women's surgical center but I decided I want to get experience with a wider population and see different surgeries. This hospital is big on ENT surgeries but it should be cool. I have hospital orientation but don't get to do nursing student orientation (and I need both to start on the unit) until mid-April but I'm soooooo stoked!
