No Motivation

I have no motivation, I start second guessing myself because Nursing is so competative I don't know if I can do it. I am taking two classes over the winter so maybe that will get me going. The last time I was in school was this summer Eng 101 and I got a B, before then I was out of school for about two years. Any suggestions about how to get on track and stay motivated????
HELP

Re: No Motivation

sorry to say, but if you are feeling unmotivated in pre-clinicals, nursing school will chew you up and spit you out. even the super-motivated have moments in clinicals/school when they want to pull the hair from there heads and start to cry.

Hello Sadrobin,

Welcome to allnurses! I am sorry to hear that you are feeling a lack of motivation so early in your nursing career. I do agree with the others on the fact that it takes alot of motivation to be successful in nursing school, but I want to encourage you to continue on with your goal. It is well worth the work!

It sounds like the underlying cause of your decreased motivation is a lack of self confidence. You have been out of school and are now questioning your ability as a student, whether you will be 'competitive'...able to keep up with the other students. That is very understandable. But you will never know if you do not try.

It is good that you are taking classes this winter (pre-nursing courses/pre-req's I assume) Perhaps they will jump start your engine and get you excited about all that you are getting ready to learn. Keep in mind that learning in Nursing class and learning in English class vary greatly...so do not predict your success or failure based on that comparison. I know that I adore anything to do with science and perform much better in my science/nursing courses than I do in such courses as english/music/art, etc.

I am glad you came here with your frustration. Looking for support shows that there is SOME motivation to pursue nursing...you just need to get the ball rolling. Hopefully, you will find nurses and students here that will keep you inspired on such bleak days, as I have during my time in nursing school!

Keep your head up!

ASW

Re: No Motivation

Some of what you're describing could be connected with clinical depression. Please, contact your health care provider and have an evaluation.

Although there often is a trigger for depression, there doesn't have to be an obvious one. In endogenous depression, there can be a chemical imbalance that casts a shadow over everything and robs you of desire, motivation, and passion.

Depression is often underdiagnosed. Patients don't speak of their symptoms to a doc, thinking they are just tired or stressed. Docs who do hear the complaints sometimes think the same thing. The thing with depression is that it can be so subtle and sneaky. And hard to pin down. Are you depressed because you're tired and unmotivated? Or are you tired and unmotivated because you're depressed?

Depression, if that is part of what's ailing you, is usually quite treatable.

Please have yourself checked out. If you do nothing more than rule out depression, that in itself is a step forward.
