New Nursing Students - Are your schools requiring you to have laptops?

Just found out that they are requiring our class to have laptops. They have a contract with Dell for a discount, but dang! Yet another expense! I e-mailed them to see if a macbook was eligible and they said no. I wrote them again to ask if I could get the software that is required for my would they reconsider. I'm still waiting for a response. I don't see the sense in having 2 laptops for one person.

Are your schools requiring you to have laptops? Please post. Share in my pain, LOL!

Thanks!

Why do you have to have two lap tops??? If you already have one how can they make you get another one. Can't they just sell you the software? Sure you need a computer with internet but saying that it MUST be a laptop....do you not go to a regular college with computers on campus??

Re: New Nursing Students - Are your schools requiring you to have laptops?

I already have a computer at home and I recently purchased my mac laptop before they informed us of their laptop requirement. Last semester they just required that each student have a computer. There are computer labs on campus, so go figure! They said that my mac laptop was not eligible, so I'm appealing to them again! Like you said, it doesn't make sense to purchase another laptop when you already have one!

What they going to do, throw you out the program? See if you can share the software with your friends somehow. That's just crazy..... Some student's share books, too.

Yes they require us to have one and they have specific specifications with it. Another expense but I know its worth it. I really do need a new computer and laptop is a good idea for me anyways.

Re: New Nursing Students - Are your schools requiring you to have laptops?

I know of some grad programs that require a specific brand of laptop that of course you can order through them. Not any undergrad ones though. We do HAVE to buy new books that come with a CD version and an access code in order to get to the course website, which is irritating to me since I will never access the CD version of the book. Oh well, only 3 more semesters.

The NS I'm attending Aug. 20 also requires a laptop that has to be purchased through the school. It is pre-loaded with the NS software we need. The computer is a DELL and it will cost us $1300. Yikes! My sis made a comment that they may have put a tracking device that monitors our online activities. she sure has an active imagination!

Can you post a link to the requirements? May be more helpful for us to help you if we see it.

For example you have a Macbook so you can run any software- even windows stuff- I wont go in to detail unless need be at this point.

Re: New Nursing Students - Are your schools requiring you to have laptops?

Mine isn't requiring laptops, but they did say at our general orientation that they "don't recommend macs". That's too bad, because I also just bought a new macbook, and it has all the microsoft office software on it, so it will have to do!

Re: New Nursing Students - Are your schools requiring you to have laptops?

How weird. Our school "strongly discourages" the use of laptops in class. It's too distracting to the other students.
