I was just on another nursing message board, my first time there and the first post I read is this really negative view of nursing ( I attatched it at the bottom in red). Warning us students to reconsider. I don't know about all of you student nurses but it really gets my goat because here I am getting excited about going into this profession and I feel a lot of people try to burst your bubble and to tell you the truth all of these negatives about nursing is really bothering me. Some people can make you feel as if you're actually stepping into the pits of hell. I understand some people are just bitter, maybe the job wasn't for them. Whatever the reason, it does scare me....a lot. I have worked as a NA in a Nursing home. I know that this is some HARD sh*it! But dang, is it really that bad? By the way, I really did not like that job because no one would HELP me, plus I didn't like to cry on a daily basis because I was uneducated and left on my own. I am a much too happy person for that kind of misery. I have been in many unfullfilling careers and one of the reasons I wanted to be a nurse was the teamwork and the professionalism of it. I'm starting to find out there isn't a lot of professionalism involved and a lot of bitter people. Is this true? Anyone else agitated and scared like me? Maybe i'll feel better tomorrow. Sigh.

Well, about all I can say for this person is, thank God she found a way to get out of nursing, because I sure don't want anyone with her attitude to be taking care of me or my family!

YES, nursing really sucks sometimes, especially in an atmosphere which emphasizes profits over patients. But a negative attitude never changed anything.........doctors WILL respect you if you know your stuff and advocate for their patients, you CAN make a decent living, and there is plenty of satisfaction to be gained from being there at just the right moment to save someone, to help someone make a tough decision, to welcome a new baby into the world, or to hold the hand of a fellow human being as he or she lets go of life.

Nursing, like anything else, is what you make it. I'm sorry there's so much negativism out there.......it's like the Peace Corps, the 'toughest job you'll ever love'. And I'm not some starry-eyed new grad, either: I've been in health care for 10 years, an RN for seven of those years, and I've gotten burned out twice, yet that's what's made me strong.

You know, I would have to agree with every single statement made by the person in red ink. My coworkers and I talk about all of those issues a great deal. These ARE legitimate problems with the field. As long as you can accept the profession's limitations, you'll be reasonably happy in the field -- but I understand how people get "burned out" & tired of remaining voiceless, powerless and frustrated when all you want is a little respect, a chance to give valuable input & to make positive changes, and the best care for your patients.

Honestly, students have NO IDEA what the field is really like. You won't know the truth from classroom dialogues, textbooks, or observation from a vantage point outside of the RN/LPN role. I thought I knew what it was really like when I was a nursing assistant -- how wrong I was.

A year or so in the field, practicing as an RN/LPN, will really open your eyes. Please hold your judgement of well-meaning advice until you experience the reality of the job for a while yourself. Let's hear your opinion a year after you've worked under your own license, in the field.

I just wanted to mention, it's considered something of a breach of netiquette to cut and paste someone else's words without their permission. It would probably be more appropriate to just post a link to the person's post and we could view it where it was originally posted.

It's been equally looked down upon on most message boards I've frequented to link to an inflammatory post on another site, as that can (inadvertently) lead to the OP being flamed and retalitory posts in our own boards. (Been there, seen that, what an ugly sight it was!)

Yep, you're absolutely right. I just think that linking it, rather than cutting and pasting it without the author's permission, would be the lesser of two evils.

Better yet - just paraphrase what the person said in their post.

SoulShine - Sorry but I have to agree with everything posted by the person in red ink. I've been in nursing a looonnnnggg time and am not bitter, just realistic.
Thank God for you students. Lord knows us baby boomers are aging and gonna need nurses ourselves before too long. But have to say I told my daughter I'd never let her go into nursing. And I tell that to others who ask as well.
Yeah, it is possible to find areas that you can work in and not hate, and there are times when its great. A rare occasion when you really make someone's life better. But, for the most part, you are overworked and go home exhausted, praying that you didn't forget to hang someones I.V. meds or such, and then have to ignore the phone because they are calling saying you "must" come in early etc.
If I had it to do over there is no way I'd become a nurse again.

Don't worry about the negative nurses. Let them be negative. There are other sites out her that focuse on positive things in the profession. Like discovernursing.com. They have alot of different profiles of nurses that have inspiring things to say about why they like nursing. Nursing isn't for everyone but it may be for you so don't worry about what others say about the field especially the negative things........
