Need Opinion on Class Schedule please!

I'm starting the nursing program this Fall (yeah!).

I am enrolled in Anatomy and Physiology I & II this summer. I finish Part I of AP this Thursday, but I don't think I am going to take Part II the second part of the summer because I am so incredibly burned out with 5 1/2 hours of classes per day, 4 days per week, and 2 exams per week. I am in a constant state of cramming and I don't think I can take round 2 and still keep a good grade.

Because almost all of my pre-reqs are knocked out for my Nursing program...this is all I HAVE to take for this Fall:

Nursing I
Pharmacology I (which is online at our school)

I also need to fit in the following, somewhere over the next two years:

Anatomy and Physiology II (probably in the Spring 2008)
Introduction to Statistics (not required, but probably a good idea)
Statistics I (required for my BSN, not ASN)
Microbiology (required for my BSN)
Nutrition (required for my BSN)
Life Span I (Psychology)

I was thinking of doing...

Microbiology THIS Fall
Anatomy and Physiology II Spring 2008
Summer 2008...Nutrition (online...but I'll have a health assessment for Nursing that summer)
Introduction to Statistics, Fall 2008
Life Span I, Fall 2008
Statistics, Spring 2008

This would allow me to only take only 3 classes, per semester, other than Fall 2008, when I would have 4, with two of them online, b/c one would be my Life Span I course and the other would be Pharmacology III.

I have heard that Pharmacology is easy...just memorization and you take a test.

I just have no clue of how much is involved in these nursing classes. Our clinicals are scheduled from 7:00 am. to 3:00 pm. one day per week.

I'm also not working....What do you guys think?

Lotta classes on that list With respect to A&P II, I would strongly recommend completing that before starting your nursing class. IMHO A&P II is far and away the most important pre-req you will take. It's where you learn how the body systems actually function. That knowledge is critical to understanding what is going on with your patients.

G'luck.

I would get A&P 2 out of the way as well....I know it will be stressfull, but better taking it alone this summer than struggling with it while taking other important classes..also, I thought it was better to finish A&P before taking Micro? Unfortunately, I'm basically takng all my sciences this summer, fall and spring so I don't plan on having much of a life.
Summer: Statistics, Bio 4 (start next week. AHH!)
Fall: Bio 3, Chem 3, Dev Psych 1, Anatomy
Sprng: Chem 4, Dev Psych 2, Physiology, Micro
I set it up this way so that I could start the nursing sequence in fall of 08 ...take care and good luck

Re: Need Opinion on Class Schedule please!

Wow! Those aren't all prereqs? I guess your school does it differently, we must complete every one of those before we apply to the CON (it is BSN though). I agree with the other poster though - suck it up and take A&P II now. You will need that info for every nursing course you take, and trust me, your professors will not review any of it. I hope you're right about your pharm - my class is averaging a low C and a lot of people are going to have to retake it this fall. Good luck, that sounds like a lot of "co-reqs!"

A&P 2 is not a pre-req for Micro? I can't remember...even if it's not, I would still take the A&P before the Micro....

Re: Need Opinion on Class Schedule please!

I wouldn't say that pharm is easy. Some teachers just have you spit out memorized info, but mine had critical thinking tests. For example he gives you the diagnosis and a scenario and you need to do something like determine the most appropriate drug for that particular patient. Which means I need to know the diagnosis, all drugs that treat it, and which drug (based on things like side effects, dosing, contraindications, etc.) would be most appropriate given the data provided. Not easy, and hardly even memorization.

I think your plan will probably work, but don't underestimate ANY of those classes. They can all be very challenging, depending on who teaches them.

Re: Need Opinion on Class Schedule please!

I appreciate everyone's responses.

I finally got ahold of someone in the nursing faculty, and they also highly recommended that I take it anyway.

Their reasoning, was even if I get a C in the class...if I do well in the nursing classes...that some of the nursing classes are 7, 8 or 9 semester hours and two years of that will offset the C in my GPA, especially if I get a good grade in AP I, which I will.

To everyone who asked...Micro around here is an independent course..all you have to have is Biology. The AP courses are not pre-reqs, they are actually co-reqs...it's easier to get into the program if you have had them before you apply, but it won't stop you from getting in.

I'm actually taking my AP courses at another college b/c the professor at my school...A's are an urban myth in his class, and students are struggling just to get C's in his class, and I have met so many who are taking it for the second time..I can't imagine having to do this class twice.

Thanks everyone!
