Re: Need help with shoes.....

I swear by my New Balance shoes. I had chronic leg and foot pain and fatigue but with my new shoes I still feel great at the end of a shift.

Re: Need help with shoes.....

I am another person who likes wearing New Balance tennis shoes at the workplace. I work 16-hour shifts, and spend much of my time on my feet. However, my feet still feel pretty decent after 16 hours of wearing a pair of New Balance shoes that fit properly. If you're willing to spend a whole lot of money for comfort, Z-coils makes athletic shoes for healthcare professionals that are supposed to be comfy and last virtually forever if fitted correctly.

Re: Need help with shoes.....

The best shoes are the ones that fit you best, period. Expensive shoes that don't work on your feet are a waste of money. Cheap shoes that make your back and legs feel good at the end of the day are priceless.

You'll need to try on a bunch of them, walk around a bit, jump and bounce, and after all that you'll need to just take a guess. Your first pair may be outstanding or a bust. It's all trial and error! You can spend $120 or $20 and have the exact (and I mean exact) same outcome.

Everyone loves the shoes that currently work on them. And that means out of 20 nurses, you're likely to get about 15 different responses!

Take a trip to the uniform and/or shoe store. Try them out. Ask which are their best sellers (if you feel you can believe the clerk). Ask about policies for returns (if you buy them and the next day are mad you did).

Good luck to you!!

Re: Need help with shoes.....

That makes perfect since to ask the sales clerk what are the best sellers! I will do that. I don't mind spending the money if the shoe fits and feels good for as long as some of you guys are wearing them- 12-16 hrs. I have heard good things about the New Balence shoes. I will go this week and get my shoes. Thanks everyone. Do any of you guys wear stockings to help with leg pain? Just curious.

Re: Need help with shoes.....

I'm not in nursing school yet, so I have no idea on the shoes. It sounds like that will be trial and error....another thing to look forward to!

Anyhow, I have a friend that is a NICU nurse and also just finished her NP (getting ready to take boards). She does wear stockings. I asked her about them and she said that if you want to avoid veracose (sp?) veins, then the proper stockings for circulation are the way to go!

Good luck in Nursing School!!

Nope, no stockings, just good-fitting shoes with enough cushioning to my liking! Also, I happen to be a fan of well-cushioned SOCKS: I don't care for those nearly-nothing nylon things, personally. I like a sock that is comfortable in and of itself, can absorb moisture as needed, and not too constricting around ankles or calves.

My, we're all particular, aren't we?

On occasion, I will wear TED hose or support stockings at work.

Re: Need help with shoes.....

Would you recommend the ones with the shocks? (The ones that are like you're walking on springs?)

I do...the knee socks variety. They're great! I can be on my feet all shift on hard floors and not ache at all afterwards. They're worth every penny.
