My daughters first day of kindergarten.. conflicts!

I can't believe it.. our first day of our main nursing class is Tuesday at 1. My daughter's very first day of kindergarten is that same day- the school does an orientation (they have the parents sit with the kids through part of it, then the kids go off to their class on their own for the first time, the parents have a session and then go to their child's class and then home with their child) with the parents and their children to ease the kids in, and it starts at 130!! I can not miss my daughter's very 1st day of school !! At the same time I can't afford to miss this class either.... I feel so torn!

I emailed the instructor asking if I could leave a tape recorder and pick up the handouts at the beginning of class but haven't heard back yet... I hope she agrees!

what horrible luck I hope they let you leave a tape recorder there, I know there is no way I could miss my childs first day of kindergarden, even for nursing school.

I'm going to miss the kindergarten orientation as well as our daughter's first day of kindergarten. I dread missing this, but I've been home with her this whole time. She'll be fine with Daddy and he's been instructed to take a lot of pictures.

I just wonder how bad her hair will look....

Re: My daughters first day of kindergarten.. conflicts!

My daughter's first day of Kindergarten is the same day as a final exam worth more than 1/3 of my overall grade. I've already done orientation with her, and parents do not stay the first day at all, so we decided that my husband would drop her off and I would pick her up. It's definitely not ideal and I've been a wreck about it, but at least I've already had a chance to meet and chat with her teacher and have orientation, and I know she'll do great. I think I would be much more upset in your situation, since you are supposed to be there and be involved the first day - I'm excited to pick her up in the afternoon and hear all about her big day. I hope that you are able to find a solution.

I feel your pain. My daughter's orientation is the same day as I have clinicals so I'm not going to be able to go either. I think Grandma has been nominated to take her for me. I feel soo bad but I am going to school so I can give her a better life so I guess in the long run it is what is best for her.

I know how you feel also. My daughter is 3 and her first day of preschool is the same day as my first day of class. It really sucks, but grandma is going to be there to take pictures.

My friend had a similar situation last month. She asked her instructor if one of her friends in the class could video the class for the day and she would come pick up her handouts and fill out her paperwork. The instructor encouraged her to attended her child's school and agreed to the one day recording.

Good luck

Re: My daughters first day of kindergarten.. conflicts!

You know, you would think that the schools would have caught on to this and made some accommodation before now.

More and more nursing students are 'mature' and nursing school is a second or even third career for them. Perhaps, understanding the fact that most of the schools in the area (including kindergarden, middle, etc.) start on exactly the same day each semester they might decide to start classes a couple of hours late to afford students the opportunity to be good parents without sacrificing that all-important first impression - who wants to be late on the first day of class! Surely the people who teach school face a similar dilemma with their own kids and presumably they don't have the option of skipping class.

I can't for the life of me understand why nobody has considered staggering the local first day of classes with the youngest kids starting first, older kids graduating up to middle and high school next, and then us (much) older kids!

!
... and certainly you are not the only kindergarden parent who needs to work (or go to school.) Your child's teacher should also be able to accommodate a working parent.
