mean clinical directors??

I went in the hospital a few days ago for emergency gall bladder removal, and noticed some nursing students coming on the med surge floor. Their director was literally barking orders at them, in such a mean way that not only did I take notice, but the one student didn't look far from tears...this lady was really mean to say the least..I start school in less than 60 days, and while I made a point to ask which school they were from (not mine, tg!!), it still made me wonder, is this how clinicals will be?? are all the directors so nasty with students while on the floor?? I hope not!! Talk about scary!!

Re: mean clinical directors??

Most instructors are not that mean, maybe anal but not mean, lol. They are people too and you are going to find some that are just a$$holes all the time like in any other situation. Most of mine were very nice, and the one that had everyone else terrified I found to be the most amusing. She had a lot of respect for those that were prepared and capable of doing their assigned tasks; however, she did have a habit of eating those that were afraid of her and never seemed to have the correct answer for the questions that everyone else knew she would ask so they were prepared (i.e. what are the side effects of this med, what will you need in order to change this dressing, ect.). IMO, relax and realise that you're going to have both instructors and fellow students that your not crazy about, but the only thing you truly need to focus on is getting the best edu possible.
Good luck!

Re: mean clinical directors??

thanks..I guess it just got a bit "real" for me to see it in action as a patient in a hospital, instead of sitting here drumming up how it will be when...I will say, I learned quite a bit during my stay, I guess it's a good experiance to have (being a patient) before going to be a student...I still felt bad for that girl, even all the nurses at the station disappeared until the director was gone, lol...
