May Grads? Do you have jobs yet?

I graduate in May! I am terrified though because I hear all my classmates talking about their new jobs... and I dont have one yet... in fact I havent even applied! I have the resume all written up... I just dont know what field I want to apply to. I know that I really do not like med/surg... but I know that the push for new grads to go to that environment is great... and I understand the reasons for it as well. I just cant bring myself to apply for a med/surg position!

So... soon-to-be grads... do you have jobs yet? What areas are you working in?

Hope everyone is doing well!!!!!

Re: May Grads? Do you have jobs yet?

I wont graduate until next May, but I have a few friends graduating this May and they are not going to med/surg. Actually, 2 of them are going to ICUs and the other one is going to some type of stepdown unit.

I know that many people push the issue with new grads going to med/surg to gain experience with their skills, but from what I understand the hospitals that hired these few nurses told them that they would rather train them from scratch, straight out of school, than to have to re-teach them and break bad habits that they could have learned in med/surg.

I have no desire to go to med/surg either, so next year you can be sure that I'll be applying where I think will be the best fit for me.

Best of luck to you!! Please let us know where your job search leads you.

Re: May Grads? Do you have jobs yet?

Around here, you start out early applying for fellowships and specialty unit positions unless you want med/surg. A lot of folks started filling out apps after the first of the year.

I recently filled out a med/surg-type floor app and got a call this week for an interview. I think those jobs are slightly easier to get later in the game....however I'm still holding out hope I'll hear from one of the specialty units I interviewed for!!

Good luck!!

Mia:

I just want to say that I LOVE this saying on your posts....it's just wonderful!!

Today I bent the truth to be kind,
and I have no regret, for I am far surer of what is kind
than I am of what is true. ~ Robert Brault

And wow, I am so hoping to hear something soon...thanks for your kind words!! I'm going to be crushed if I don't get one of those positions!! Of course, if I don't start studying for my last test and the final, worrying about a job will be the least of my worries, lol!!

Best wishes as you continue in your nursing school journey!!

Re: May Grads? Do you have jobs yet?

I graduate at the end of April (29 days and counting...) I've worked in school nursing for 4 years and as a nurse extern in NICU for the last year. I will keep both of my jobs when I graduate; 30 hours a week at the school (PreK through 8th grade) and flex in the NICU. Love those babies!

Re: May Grads? Do you have jobs yet?

I work as a tech on a ortho/neuro floor....and the way things are going it sounds like I'm guarenteed a position on my floor.....not sure if I want it. I have Follow up interviews tomorrow on a caridology floor and a critical care ICU.....I've been applying/going to dinners/open houses since feb....and have 3 more interviews put together.....get on the ball....like yesterday...and apply whereever you want....no harm if you don't ask...

Re: May Grads? Do you have jobs yet?

I graduate in May and my class starting applying for internships in April. Half of the of our class has gotten offers for internships in ICU, ER, Cadrio, Peds, L&D, oncology, and NICU. the other hald are so are still interviewing.

I accpeted an ICU internship. In my opinion you should start in a poisition/unit that are you are going to be happy in. I am glad I decided to take the internship because I would not be happy anywhere else.

I say if you do not want to work on a med/surg unit do not become a GN on a med/surg unit go where you want to be.

Good luck in your decision

Re: May Grads? Do you have jobs yet?

I graduate May 9th!!

I have worked as a nurse tech/extern since last summer in a large teaching hospital PICU and was offered a position there which I accepted. I'm very excited!

Specialty positions here can be hard to come by if your not already working there as an extern or something but there are plenty of Med/surg type jobs around!

I believe that you should work in the area you want to work in or you will be miserable.

Good luck!
