Question less than 6 weeks til school starts!!!!!

That's right the count down is on. I have been trying to organize and clean my house because I know once nursing class starts life as I know it will end. I am so nervous anyone else? How are you passing the time? What should I do to prepare? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

donna

Re: less than 6 weeks til school starts!!!!!

Congratulations!

Best advice is to get your house put together, laundry caught up, files in order, desk/work area in top shape, because you won't be doing much of anything other than studying for a long time to come

Don't make yourself crazy studying too much in advance. People will tell you to study this and that, but until you get the syllabus for each class, you won't know the focal point any of the instructors choose. Reading gobs of stuff that isn't expected to be covered (or not covered anytime soon) is a waste of time, when time is precious.

If your course requires a dosage calculation test to pass/continue first semester (most do), brushing up on basic math and math concepts is a good idea. No calculator

Other than that, use the time you have to relax a bit....you'll have PLENTY of time to freak out later

Re: less than 6 weeks til school starts!!!!!

I know how you feel Donna! I'm starting a BN program here in Canada in Sepember and I'm refreshing my word ,excel, and powerpoint program skills for reports I might have to (will have to) do, and I also am reviewing my study methods since I have been out of school a few years,I'm 42.
I have a spare room in my house that I have turned into the "office" so that I can have all I need near when I am spending countless hours on reading and homework. Other than that, I'm just counting down my last days as a chemical production worker and looking forward to the changes that life will bring. I hope that you find what you are looking for from this journey you are about to begin.
Best of luck,

Joe

Re: less than 6 weeks til school starts!!!!!

Well, I can tell ya lots of things that you should do...but, I spent the 3 weeks of free time before classes started doing anything but cleaning I surfed allnurses, shopped for scrubs, shoes, steth, etc, and annoyed everyone around me with my excitement. Maybe you should just plan on doing what I did and ya just might get some cleaning done

Ah, jeepers....thanks for the reminder!!

I am starting my first semester and am doing some cleaning up and straightening up and also LOTS of fiction reading in order to not feel so deprived once school starts!!

I am excited, anxious, nervous, scared to death (I submit my resignation tomorrow from my "previous career" of the past 6 years), frightened to be broke, and ready to move on with this!!

Good luck everyone!!

Re: less than 6 weeks til school starts!!!!!

Thanks for all the replys. I too gave notice at my job and will be an unemployed nursing student as of August 9th. I am trying to get a weekend unit secretary job at a local hospital but have heard nothing yet. I am trying not to fret about a job or the upcoming classes but it is hard. I just put it all in God's hands to work out..

Re: less than 6 weeks til school starts!!!!!

Im trying to figure out ways to stream line the next 2 years. I have a husband and 2 girls under 5 so life will be hard especially with an hour commute to school.

Ive been trying to get my soon to be kindergartener into a morning routine now so she isnt blown away when her school starts in August. We have got to get her used to getting up and MOVIN.

Also I have been preparing or 'prepping' all my dinner meals the day before or around lunch time. I chop up everything before hand tomatoes, lettuce, green onions, potatoes whatever I plan on making for dinner (like tacos).
It has helped soooo much. I just pull 5 tupperware containers out of the fridge with everything prechopped and assemble everything. You could really even cook all your meat ahead as well. Like shredded chicken or beef and just warm it up at dinner.
Dinner is a VERY chaotic time in our house (I dont know why!) so doing this has helped.
I also plan to have my car stocked with quick breakfast stuff, like granola bars, poptarts, trailmix, nutrigrain bars, bagels, you name it and just take a carnation instant breakfast with me as well when I leave early.

As for laundry my daughter will be at a private school so she only has uniforms, (yea!).
House cleaning will simply have to wait................2 years.

sigh.. only 6 weeks till I start again. .. ... thats the difference between first and second year, last year at this time I was you, now I'm..

Enjoy your time, read a book- not a school book, because you wont see a "real just for fun book" until Christams break. Catch a few movies, cuz you wont see them either

Allnurses helped me soooo much before my first year. On the day that school started people were leaving in tears because of the overload of information. I, on the other hand, felt that I was mentally prepared, and felt confident that first day.

I know you hear this all the time, but take time to relax NOW! You will be amazed when you finish your first year on how much you learned, and how little time you actually had to do something that you enjoyed.

If you are married, have your spouse go with you to an information/orientation session if it is allowed. Our school began inviting them to orientation because the divorce rate among nursing students was so high. Explain to them (frequently) the time committment that you are about to begin. You will need help with laundry, cleaning, kids, shopping, etc. They must really be informed if you want to avoid fights about how you never come up out of your books!

Go in confident that you can handle the pressure and do your best.
