leading cause of breast disorders in young women

This is a multiple choice question in the manual,

Which of the following is the leading cause of breast disorders in young women?
(a) breast cancer
(b) fibrocystic changes
(c) fibroadenoma
(d) ductal ectasia

My first choice was (c) fibroadenoma because, as my textbook states
"fibroadenoma is a comon cause of discrete benign breast lumps in young women. It generally occurs in women between 15 and 25 years of age and is the most frequetn cause of breast masses in women under 25 years of age."

My textbook says that fibrocystic changes occur most frequently in women between 35 and 50 years of age but often begin in women as young as 20 years of age.

The answer is (b)

any thoughts?

I would have guessed B. It is exacerbated by caffeine, which many young women ingest in excess amounts.

My thoughts are that this type of knowledge is unnecessary for 99.9% of nurses. I wish nursing schools would concentrate on more general information.

Re: leading cause of breast disorders in young women

is fibroadenoma a specific type of fibrocystic change? If so, it would make sense to choose the more general answer for a question like that.

Re: leading cause of breast disorders in young women

My answer was B. Fibrocystic breast ... usually from hormone levels changing.
